money or the lifestyle?

so just started a new job working 40hour weeks 8.30 to 5 etc etc. this is the first job i have ever had like this and i'm starting to think f**k this for the rest of my life! its barely enough to keep me occupied. i get home from work and am bored out of my brains cause i have soo much time on my hands.
i'm used to working on the dairy farm which is 10-14hour days 7 days a week and i enjoy that sort of work as it keeps you busy and your mind is always active. but my new job is what i always thought of as my 'dream job' (for where i'm at now anyway) and was just expecting a little more than spending 8hours at a desk each day and not really have to think about what i'm doing.

so i thought i would put it to TS (which will probably result in 5+ pages of spam) but long term is it better to do the long hours, get somewhere in life and then sit back and enjoy what you have, or take a relaxed approach to worklife and enjoy the lifestyle along the way??

maybe i need to give it some time but at this stage i'd say i'd rather work 80-90hour weeks, be cut off from society (live in the middle of nowhere), get paid more and enjoy the time i do have off and be able to have shitloads of money to spend on my car whenever i want.

I never believed in working 9-5, or working for someone.

You work hard, and they'll just give you more work, for the same pay.

You're giving more than 1/3 of your life to your employer who is probably drinking red wine and shagging a hot chick on his yacht while you slave for them. At least that's what's pretty much happened at my old jobs.

i have nothing against working for someone, in fact most bosses are under a whole lot more stress these days than the employees they pay to do the work so i have a huge amount of respect for someone willing to stick their neck on the line and provide people with jobs.

maybe i do have too much time on my hands. an empty flat with no TV doesn't help but i've been brought up on the 'if your not working or recovering from work you're wasting time' which served my dad pretty well up to now and he started with nothing but a good attitude towards hard work.

definately wanting to start my own business as soon as i have gained the experience but the lifestyle goes with the experience and i'd rather just have the money.

I'm in an interesting situation slightly different to yours. I love my job, great manager, excellent team under me, I work with great friends & have lots of potential to do well there. My boss doesn't want to be in his role long, so he's training me quite hard to take over and sending me too a lot of meetings he should be attending.
I work 8.30am - 6.30pm which I think is a cruise (esp. for what I'm paid), and I'm more senior than anyone else even remotely close to my age.

But - I've always wanted to move overseas and now I'm in my late 20's, I don't know whether I take the risk and walk away from my dream job to get some 'life experiences' like most of my friends, or settle down, buy a house, bigger boat etc etc.

I still have no idea what to do. Feel like a bit of a sell out staying. But leaving feels counter-intuative.

IMO stick at your job a while - it sometimes takes a while for you to fit into the groove and really start to like it. Also sounds like you need a project car.

i have a hobby - my car and driving it. unfortunately both require $$. and i do have a project car! i drive it to and from work every day! haha

Without a doubt, lifestyle. As for getting somewhere, I don't see this linked to the number of hours you do, more so what you do with those hours. I probably do 35 hours a week and love it Would be nice to get more hours, but I quite enjoy spare time, so i'm in no hurry to do more. Though the earthquake will change that for me over the next couple years I would guess.

Having a nice car and driving it, is not enough to keep you busy. Find something else that interests you and you'll soon be enjoying that free time Currently working full time, studying part time, do side work on cars / computers, have my project cars, wrecking a car, teaching myself to weld and am now looking to buy a mountain bike to hurt myself with.

That said, I always have too much to do and not enough money to fund it. But i'd personally rather have it like that than too much money and bored to tears.

tbh as long as i have enough time off and money to work on my car and do all the driving/events i want then i don't mind working at all. i just hate having too much time and not enough money it feels like a waste.

Do cash jobs on the side, means more money from doing something you enjoy.

Start with oil changes for friends and family, brake pads, maintenance stuff thats easy enough but people pay for, and just go from there.

That way as well you can do as much as you like

I work 7:30-3:30 drawing buildings. I should probably work longer hours but I love my free time. I love my job but free time is good too.

It depends what you want. My GFs Uncle works 80-100 hour weeks (in France) but has long holidays. He just got back from Mt Everest's Base camp.

i dont see the point of working a million hours a week making billions of dollars with no time to spend it and no time to enjoy the things ou have spent it on.

there is NO way i could be stuck behind a desk all day tho so that limits what i can do really.

Happiness is the answer, if you hate your job like you do now, get out, you spend so much of your time there that if you hate yor job, it spills over into your personal life. I'd rather have a lower paying job that I loved, than a high paying job that I hated getting out of bed for everyday! By the sounds of it you should get back into your previous type of work as it seems its what makes you happier.
