Im after a 2zz engine but i need to know if the stock computer will work without the origional key and ignition barrel.

does anyone definitely know? I'm guessing its a yes and i'll either need the stock key/ignition or get a new set matched which will be expensive or an after market computer which will be even more expensive.

It will work, you can tape 2ZZ key (that came with the motor) to the antenna loop (that goes around the barrel on the 2ZZ) in some hidden place.

This way you can use original key.

BUT! if you want immobilizer/transponder key functionality, you will need to sue 2ZZ key/barrel combo, or dodgy way pull out the 2ZZ key from the antenna loop when you want it immobilized.

You will also need to hook up the "key in the barrel" switch to the 2ZZ ecu.

Wife's car is a 2001 2ZZGE Fielder and it definitely has no factory immobiliser as i got a $5 key cut from bunnings and it starts the car fine.

You will probably find the anything NZ new will have an immobiliser,
and all the Jap import stuff will not.


And the transponder does not usually go to the Engine ECU anyway,
it goes to a Body Control Module or Immobiliser ECU when then outputs the needed signal to the ECU, and they are all coded together,
so all 3 must be connected and from the same car.


I would presume you would have jap stuff anyway though as NZ new 2ZZGE is quite rare.

yea the engine i bought will be a jap. cheers guys, cant wait to stick it in the car. just need to source a gearbox, clutch and flywheel now :p

A question along similar lines, i have a ceres that came with the original key that has remote central locking. Now i changed the battery in it and it still doesnt work.
I read somewhere it can be if the battery is flat for two long the key can lose its code, is this right and what would it cost to get a replacement key with remote central?

We get that all the time at work as the Toyota dealer send them to us.
You can fit an aftermarket central locking kit for about the same price as a new key,

and if you buy a new key there is no guarantee that the key is the fault and you cant be 100% sure that it will be fixed,
where the aftermarket system you get 2 new remotes and can guarantee it will work, and can get extra remotes for bugger all.

....along the same lines.... whats a decent remote central locking unit worth Matt? :lol: See lots of crap on trademe, but DO NOT WANT.

We do a Dynatron one, takes the same remotes etc as the full alarms,
just have different pictures on the buttons. Has good support, remotes are available and easy to program.
Fitted heaps through work and never had an issue with one that was fitted correctly.
Not sure what we sell them for, but $167 has jumped into my mind....
Will look tomorrow and see as I may be wrong.
