Dwell time, using dual coils..

Postby lorolla24 » Sun Jan 09, 2011 5:52 pm

Hi,

I have changed my 20v turbo setup from dist to wasted spark using evo coils.

I am running v5 link ecu.

Dwell time with dist was 3ms.

Question:
Should this need to be changed with the wasted spark setup?
What are other people running?

Cheers,

Did one recently and used about 5-6ms cranking dwell and 3.5-4.0ms running dwell. Check that the coils don't overheat while idling or with the key on but engine not running. Should be warm to touch but not hot.

This was on an early 4G63 from an E1/2/3

Interesting,

I had to increase it to 4.5ms from 3ms so it wouldn't splutter but my biggest concern is that the dizzy was at it's most advanced position even before i changed the dwell.

Advanced it just so it wouldn't splutter when you give the throttle a quick jab.

Will be taking it to get tuned properly but need it to run OK for now.

Put it in timing lock mode and check base timing before you even start anything else.

+1

This is a VERY easy mistake to make and can cost you hours of head scratching if overlooked (speaking from experience lol)

Sorry,

+1?

Can you set that as the locked timing?

Sorry, Im old!!! haha

My base timing was set to 10deg and 3ms dwell, but since i had change spark setup i have had to advance it just so it didn't stutter when i stab the throttle.

Now that i have increased the dwell to 4.5ms at full advance i might be able to drop the dizzy back to normal.

I was mainly interested in what other guys have there dwell time set at using wasted spark setup.

Cheers,

I'm using a wasted spark system with a V6 mitsi ignitor and 7M-GTE coils with my EMS Stinger ECU.

My base is set to 10 as well but I'm running 2.125 dwell...
