Compatibility of a Silver Top and Black Top parts

Postby forge1 » Mon Jan 24, 2011 7:26 pm

Hey everyone,

I have a Black Top in my Carib and there are some issues.

I have been offered a 1992 Toyota Levin with a Silver Top that runs mint (no issues) and I was wanting to know if I can use sensor's etc and parts on my Black Top. (oxy sensor, air temp sensor, etc)

Also are the gearboxes interchangeable?

Mine is a C56 5 speed with LSD and Im goign to rebuild it so was going to use the other one (if it fits)as a temp use box. I have been told that they swap but the axles are different.

Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.

to start with there is some interchangable parts with the 20v's

the gearboxes will be interchangable but if the silver top has a c52 box I think you might need the drive shafts as well. the c52's have uneven length drive shafts and the c56's have a hanger bearing

You will not be able to use the air temp sensor as it is in the afm of the silver top. and the oxy sensor can be to made to fit by cutting tabs off the plug but unless you know your one is broken I don't see why you would want to put an older and most likely worse condition one in. (i have put black top into silver top, works fine but not other way)

As for the likes of TPS, water temp and knock sensor I believe they would fit but i have never done it so someone else may need to confirm

TPS, WTS and knock sensors are same as far as I know.

C52 on silver top have hanger bearing and are interchangeable with C56 (I use AE101 shafts with C160).

What different about C56 LSD axles, is that they have different length splines. You could go to pickapart and get non-LSD axles. C56 Non LSD will work fine with C52, and C160 LSD.

Not that I know of.... remember they don't use a viscous LSD so everything is the same with the helical lsd and a open diff

I had C56 non-LSD standard, everything went back together with the C56 LSD box no issues

Can only assume between the C56 boxes shafts are the same, on AE111's anyway

i'm using 1x ae101 shaft out of a c52 and 1x ae92 supercharged shaft with a c56 LSD box and it all fits together fine.

axles all fit through ae92, ae101, ae111. only difference being supercharged ones have thick axles and i think ae111 has the smallest (but they still never break) and 20V's have hanger bearings.

yup they are way bigger. don't notice any difference really as far as i can tell. torque steers quite bad but that prob has more to do with camber and roll centre than anything.

so just to clarify:

I've got a c52 in my ae101 at the moment, can i straight swap the C52 with a C56 LSD without changing axles? would I need to change any other part?
