Help! Parking in Auckland?

Postby Looonie » Thu Feb 17, 2011 5:48 pm

Hey all,

Umm slightly short notice, but we're attending an event in Auckland CBD over the next 4 days and I need to figure out where we're going to park...

The difficulty we have is each day starts at ~9am and finishes ~11.30pm, so very long days and that (at least from my research so far) means paying an earlybird fee + a night parking fee, per day... thats going to be insanely expensive.

Does anybody have any suggestions for parking in Auckland city, as near to intersection of Wellesley St West and Albert Street as possible would be ideal.

Thankies muchly!

The parking on city fringe and bussing is ok but remember busses at 11.30pm won't be great. If you're budgeting for taxis at that time you may be better just paying the parking in the CBD. All carparks offer the hourly rate parking but not sure what you'll be paying for 18hours in there, probably a lot though, don't think they get much cheaper per hour as you're in there longer, think they're designed for workers or short stays. If theres a break you could go out and move the car, I think from 6pm - 6am it'll be all of $5 or something. Sky City would probably be the best bet for parking for that amount of time, and if you buy something in there you can validate and get something off, usually works out you get a couple of free drinks.

May be worth booking a hotel in the CBD and not having to worry or do you have free accomodation?

Its free to exit the main carpark at auckland hospital between 11.30 pm and 8.30am during the week, and then something like 11pm and 9.15am on weekends. dont know why, they just put the barrier arm up and chuck a sign over the pay machine.

Parking on Union Street is 50c/hour, and free outside of 8am-5pm

Thanks for the ideas people, as mentioned because we're not finishing up until sometime after 11.30pm, any form of public transport is probably not going to be a great idea.

Also we live in Papakura so its fairly expensive also (probably comparable with gas and parking if you factor in the park and ride in papakura).

I'm tempted to think about parking on the fringe and going with the Link bus idea, but unfortunately I don't know how we're going to be off for time, something to consider if we get in there early enough I guess.

Auckland hospital is an interesting idea, even street parking in Grafton (if it still exists, was 10 years ago I lived there...).

I considered the option of booking a hotel, but a) at $140+/night for 3 nights... plus we have a pet bird so would prefer to be home each day to check on him.

Will hopefully get in early tomorrow and hunt around to find what our options are cost wise etc.

I hate cities :(
