Sweet, I will check if the rego is alive (although the owner told me it does not expire).
Would be there any problems if say I chuck a D-plate on it and drive it from Tauranga to Auckland "for repairs"?

Nope, we took a Merc on D plates from Hams to Welly for a funeral few years back, even went through booze bus and speeding ticket, cop asked us where we were from and where going etc, didn't seem to fussed.
There was an incident on motorway patrol where a guy got stung on a D plate and the cop said he needed an authority/peice of paper saying he's allowed to drive it on D plate and where to/purpose etc, which is bullshit.

I have set my eyes on a Landcruiser that is registered as farm vehicle, which needs a lot of love, but I don't want to go through the whole compliance processes just to get it on the road again...
