Fibreglass bonnet prep

Picked up a fibreglass bonnet cheap the other day.. unfortunately after a clever chap has had a go a spray painting it...

Any ideas/ tips for preparing it for paint? was thinking of sanding it off and starting again from scratch (doing the sanding prep then getting it professionally painted) i.e. what sandpaper to use etc? tips?

How bad is the surface? If you're paying someone to paint it, just get them to do the whole job. Will be a better finish.

Surface is pretty good from what I can see... just thought it would be cheaper doing the prep work myself - and spending $$ on the actual painting.

Is it CSM or DB? Is it strong enough if you sand a good layer off it?

Give it a good sand, bog up blemishes with fairing compound.
Sand again, prime, sand a paint.

I strongly suggest using a 2 pot system for fibreglass, but they're expensive

If that's the case then give it a good sand, you MIGHT wanna put a layer of fibreglass down at the bottom if it's too weak, But get all the paint off first. Use 40 grit first, it's gonna take A LONG TIME.

if it's just been spray painted then there's a good chance some paint thinners will remove it, give that a crack first.

hmm na think I'll stick to either finding a fibreglass friendly paint remover from bunning etc, or using wet and dry grade paper.

Paint doesnt appear to thick or too well stuck on - discovered headlight cleaner was capable of taking if off...

guess what, paint thinners are a fibreglass friendly paint remover.
