Suggestions for shortening a high tensile cap screw

So I have had to replace some rocker shaft retaining bolts in the head of THE STARVIA!! with cap screws(allen bolts).
I damaged one of the originals when removing it and cannot easily find an exact replacement.
But to get the correct length shank(the unthreaded bit) on the bolt, I have had to get ones that are too long.
I need to shorten the bolts.

They are M8.

They are only tightened up to 22Nm.

The method I am thinking of using is to first wind a nut(or a Die if I have one) on before cutting it.

Suggestions for shortening said bolts....?

That's a pretty safe way to go. Whenever I shorten a bolt I just cut it, use a bench grinder or linisher to square off the end and then give it a small chamfer to help lead in to the thread. Then just run the end under a wire wheel to clean the burrs out of the thread at the end

Can be done with a hacksaw and a file if thats all you've got. Really easy and a good little trick to get under your belt.

On another note, Anyone sell pre-washered cap screws? Like standard car bolts where the washer stays on the bolt

You are confused.

The original bolts are 25mm long with about 10mm of shank.
The only cap screws I could get with 10mm shank are about 40mm long.
So I need to make the cap screws the same length as the original bolts.

Sounds like you have the right plan anyway. I usually wind a nut on, make a clean cut with angle grinder or hacksaw, clean up and wind the nut in/out a few times to clean the threads.

The 4age 16v ones are a bitch, the ones that go through the rocker cover. its like a bolt with another thread that goes through to hold the rocker cover on.

These are not fun to snap

If its a bolt holding a rocker shaft id just to buy an original item from Nissan.

According to the nissan parts thingy software, that bolt is only from the CA16/18/20 SOHC engine(NOT the DET) and they stopped making it in 1986 I think. The engine was not exactly uber common. I had to get a bit of coolant hose for it and that was EX japan.
