Opinions on MK4 Golf VR6

Looking at buying a MK4 Golf with the 2.8l VR6 engine. I don't know VW's very well, will this engine throw up any major challenges in changing the clutch? (needs doing).

Car has 204kms but has been maintained by VW garages as long as it's been in NZ.

What are they like to drive (and fill)? Edit: car is manual.

Sumps are alloy and hang quite low down, my old workmates NZ-new Mk4 2.8 4motion managed to crack its sump at factory height.

Interior surfaces suffer from the typical peeling of the rubberised coating that 5-10 year old VAG products suffer from.

Mark4 is considered the unloved heavy weight of the bunch, but I still think they're a decent car. The VR6 engines tend to consume a bit of oil, and take approx 6L for an oil change. Make sure the timing chain is silent and in good order, as it's a gearbox out job to replace it.

imho 204km is one used up vw.

many things are a pain on them due to the tightly packed engine bay, which is the usual vw overly complicated mess of cracking hard plastics and falling apart soft plastics.

would not own for love nor money, but im a registered euro basher.

will admit they do go reasonably well, though i expected more from a big engine in a smaller car on my first drive.

Love the mk4 4motion v6 nice car clutch could be dear due to duel mass flywheel (may not have one cant remeber) upgraded ones can be bought however. The 2.8 mk4 engine can be pretty reliable and I know of a motor thats just been rebuilt if you need one.

Nice handling lots of torque .......but tbh unless you own shares in BP be warned they do drink.

The 2.8 is actually quite a nice engine as far as response goes. Have done a head gasket on one which was actually fairly straight forward-ish. The leads are a bit of a b*tch to get off being the only real problem encountered

It was very tidy bar wear on the steering wheel and a missing wheel arch trim. Black leather interior, sunroof and aftermarket sport suspension fitted by a VW dealer/garage.

021655940 is the number on the rear screen.

^^ yeah I was just thinking that too? That and the fact that the Mk4s don't have 'VR6' badging anywhere.

I've had a MkIII VR6 and absolutely loved it, mine was a '96 south african import with leather interior, but no air bags like the NZ-new and Jap import models had. I picked it up for $2250 needing a little bit of a tidy, and managed to sell it on for $4150 when it was time to move on. Mine had about 180k on the clock, and was 5spd manual.
