Last time I checked you could drive around on your NZ registered car for 12 months but the car has to come back to NZ ie you cannot part it out. has to be legal over here, Reg and Wof.
You pretty much could not reg a car permanantly over there if at some stage the same make/model was sold there. Eg, they sold celica = no, they did not sell convertibles except as imports, classified as seperate model = yes.
Any car you take over has to have the brake pads and tyres replaced with locally purchased products, no exceptions.
The weblinks I had a gone so start from here:

Its a lengthy and costly process, most of our clients end up just selling and purchasing a new car once they get there.

If you decide to take it, apply for the permit well before you want to ship and see if they approve it

yeah so ridiculous the guys over there can throw on a set of coilovers and sack their rides (within some certain height off the ground) and not worry about cert and wof bullshit

He was more meaning they are quite strict. ie you can be defected for fitting a pod filter (regardless is the car is MAF or MAP sensored)

And in some states they will send out notices via mail if they see your car on the road with a modified exhaust that requires you to do emission test or have rego cancelled!

so i wouldn't be able to have half the mods i do on my car, but atleast i'd be able to keep my polyurethane bushes and coilovers? sweeeeet

well i guess i too wouldn't want to part with my car either, since all the stuff i've put in just to fix it are mostly high performance parts, i've grown quite fond of my little beast.. it's a tough one, as from an outside perspective it's hardly worth it.

the great thing about starting again though is all the knowledge you've gained, things that you messed up, you get another shot & every local GT4 there is a WRC so you wont feel like you've downgraded, you'll just fall in love with another GT4 specimen and it will even be plaqued with an individual build number

you can have a pod filter, but it has to be inside a professionally made airbox. another stupid one is youre not allowed catch cans on a street car.

a guy i worked with had his nissan patrol yellow stickered (equivalent of a pink in nz) for having an aftermarket radiator overflow bottle... (it was a piece of shit anyway, had heaps of rust in it but it was officially stickered for the radiator overflow)

youre right, you dont need cert for coilovers, but you will get stickered and fined when the cops pull you over if youre too low, its also not like nz where the height limit is 100mm. in WA the exhaust has to be so far off the ground, the tires have to be so far off the gaurds and the body/structural/cross member etc has to be a specific height off the ground too. i dont know what the measurements are but a friend of mine had an Ford EA Falcon that was about 470hp atw and it cost him about $6k in replacement parts to get his car legal again after he got stickered for mirror tints....

and all the rules are different depending on what state you are in.

When I looked at it that only applied to importers. Ie people bringing in cars to sell. That was one of the things that did not apply if you were bringing in your own car.

you can do a personal import which will allow your car to be road registered permanently if

A) you migrated from nz to australia
B) you owned the car in nz (regged in your name) for more than 12 months without leaving the country for more than 40 days
C) it can pass a basic wof-type check

yeah its not that simple....

long story short, if you want to bring your car to aus, research it yourself, not just on toyspeed...

you cant have an open pod filter or a catch can or even a custom overflow??? you cant or it needs to be certed or what?? this is just going overboard.

catching oil beats burning it any day for 1

cant, not in WA anyway

you dont need and cant get 'cert' over here like you do in nz as there is no wof system. you only have to get the equivalent of a wof when the cops yellow sticker the car.

if anyone actually knows someone that has successfully imported and road registered a car to australia, id be keen to talk to them as id like to bring one of my cars over.
but unless you do know someone whos done it, then dont just say its not that hard

Many have given you what they know from their own investigations.
If you want to know for sure, do what some of us have already told you to do, contact the relevant authority in the state you are looking at going to.
It's not that hard.

Maybe mention which state you are looking to live in.

What most in NZ don't realize is that the states over here can have wildly different laws. Especially with cars.

I've found QLD very car friendly. We can jack up our 4x4's higher, bigger tyres than other states. I drove a 280kw S15 around for 12 months with minimal fuss. I got the once over at a DD checkpoint, but they had no idea what they were looking at. There were looking for a BOV, but I point out the factory one and showed them that it was plumbed back. The actual BOV was a part of the intercooler pipe kit and I told them it was a pressure relief valve to stop the turbo over-spinning. They were ok with that. Heh. I had a POD, catch can as well.

At the end of the day, if you're a wanker acting like a wanker you will get done.

I've found that because people aren't forced to maintain their cars, they are generally worse condition than the same car in NZ. How many times have you gone for a WOF to have a fault found, that doesn't happen here.

They don't have WOF here, you only have to do it when selling. My sil went straight through when I sold it.

To reg a car in QLD you just need a RWC (Roadworthy certificate, their name for a wof) and proof of ownership. A receipt is fine.

Getting it into the country, I would contact a company that specializes in it. The classic car mags are full of companies, Mainfreight does it NZ - AUS, and US - AUS. If it were me, I would be much more inclined to get a fixed price from a company like that, pay them their cheddar and let them sort the rest out. Expect to pay $4k AUD.

No, you can't fill your car with shit.

Also, you can and do get cert here. Its called an engineers report. Most call it just 'engineers'

Oh and please, don't bring any Ae101's over here. Thats the one thing the Aussie car scene has over NZ, not a million 'Custom' 20 valves everywhere.

The actual rules in QLD are pretty un-car friendly compared to other states I find, but you get away with way more because of the no WOF's and cops are useless. In NSW you can get allot of things engineered you cant in QLD

its a different era of car but getting my 1970 buick in from the states was simple (into Queensland that is). You need import approval before you bring it over $70. Once it lands you need to comply it, I dont think there would be much to do with a modern car, in my case it was seatbelts and lights. Then go for a RWC (which is like a wof but easier) ~$100 then take all the paper work down and get some plates and rego ~$800-1000 for a years worth which includes third party. All the info is online

Just to clarify - car is going to victoria , Ive talked to Jspec , who seem reputable and melbourne based. they have been pretty handy in getting some clarifications sorted out

Still not very cheap though , but then again , ive already spent a crap load on this car , so i might as well see it thru if it takes m another 3 years i dont care really ..

No one in NZ will offer decent coin to buy a similar replacement in oz , and they still hold a very good value over there , so in the unlikely event i sell it , i wont loose all that much .

Now it comes down to When , and what else should i take with me ..

Car enthusiast fact # 1. No one will ever pay what you think your car is worth. The market will determine what it is worth.

So did the guy before you too,

I know mine came with a $&#$% load of hefty receipts and nothing to show for it but a bone stock ride with about 50,000kms left of driving on it before needing major overhauls.
