Ae101 Adjustables

I have an ae101 superstrut gtz and have brought a set of MacPherson adjustables for fitting. I need components from a macphereson strut ae101 but dont know the specific parts required. What exactly will i need from the macpherson strut ae101 to fit the adjustables?

-hubs
-brakes
-swaybar
-control arms
-steering links???

All that and crossmember would be my guess. Might be easier to modify the shocks tbh.

So you're swapping out a better suspension setup and brakes for adjustables? :?

Not sure if you need to do the brakes, as people seem to swap to superstrut brakes from macpherson. Probably best to work out what you want to achieve. I can't see any improvement tbh with your plans.

Adjustable suspension will provide an improvement in handling over standard SS suspension

y not buy the adjustable suspension that works with super strut suspension in the first place? seems kinda dumb to me.

haha SS adjustables are far more expensive than what i have purchased. Very hard to come by also. So it seems kind of sensilble to me to save money and time :P

Brand new BC's are about $1400NZ for a set in NZ. Would save a lot of messing about.

Ive got R5 Std (canadian make) for $1200 already paid for them so im not looking for anything SS. Just want to know the parts that will need to be converted for a Ms ae101.

heres some actual info you might be after from another forum...

The conversion is a simple swap over process, during the conversion, you can choose to upgrade and customise some parts, and I will post further information on that.

here's a short list of parts thats required:

struts
MS hubs (ABS) - Best to change the wheel bearings while you're at it
MS lower ball joint- usually already connected to the hub when you get a used hub
lower control arm
sway bar
MS sway bar brackets and bushes
sway bar links- new items preferred
inner and outer tie rods - new items preferred, replace dust boot if the old one's ripped, toyota genuine boot is the best here
Single pot brake caliper
MS brake disc
MS brake line

You can retain SS abs sensor and cable, I got brackets welded on the chassis and the strut. You could cable tie it too, they do wonders.

Subframe is identical between the two, drive shafts will fit fine on the MS hub but make sure you get the ABS hubs if you want to retain ABS, you could also retain the superstrut steering rack, but both inner and outer tie rods need to be changed to the straight MS ones.

The SS sway bar brackets MAY work with the MS sway bar, it bolted on fine on some conversions, but didnt work on some others such as my car. You could however modify the bracket to fit by simply cutting off a ridge.

With all the parts and correct tools on hand, this conversion should be quite straight forward and shouldnt take too long.


this is for the ae111 SS but all the subframe etc is the same so shouldn't be any differences in what you need.

Since when did BC make superstrut coilovers for the corolla??

I know they make them for a Celica... not sure if they are the same. But it requires cutting up the stock strut leg and welding it to the coilover :S

If you go to pick apart you can prob buy all those bits for the conversion for around $150 :D

Im sure only the top brands make SS suspesion, like Tein and TRD.
As the bottom part of the front strut has to be casted to the shape. I doubt the other manufactures in Taiwan can make a billet 1 piece of steel in that shape! and also doubt they do any casting...

They make a set similar to the celica set where the lower is welded.

The part that needs to be welded can be unscrewed from the rest of the coil over so there is no chance of the welding heat damaging the strut. How do people think the original struts were made in the factory?

BC, TBS suspension, YZ sports, EL sports, Tein, TRD and GAB all make / made super strut AE111 coilovers

Because its not a direct bolt on and because you have to weld it, it will need to be done by a fabricator and a certified welder and have him sign off the papers before you get your cert.

Buying a non SS corolla is the better way to go :).

+ You cant fit big brakes onto SS hubs, unless you want the wheels sticking out a million miles :D - I looked at converting my car to SS but fitting a big brake kit would be a mission with the way the hub is.
