I hate my suspension. Info please

Postby TRD_ZERO » Mon Jun 06, 2011 11:12 am

So ive had just about enough of the superstrut suspension in my car. I've changed it about 3 times now and it's still not right. Now I'm in need of opinions and info for the two options I've been toying with.

Firstly I was thinking of changing from superstrut to McPherson. This way I can get a set of aexx adjustables. Now with this option I'm not 100% sure what parts I need to convert it over eg, subframe, hubs and what else?

Secondly there are bc adjustables for a superstrut celica that all you need to do is weld that superstrut arm onto the strut.
Does this work? Can I get these struts for ae111 superstrut?

What do you do to it to break it?
I don't Have AE1XX but I have ST205 with superstrut, and I preemptevely replace fig8 and short arms only once about 75000 ago, still going strong - that car seen most of the potholes on all major NZ highways and various gravel roads.

Do you use genuine replacements or botched up locally "repaired" parts?
Locally repaired parts tend to last only about couple of tens thousands.

I had a set of trd adjustables which had expired so pulled them out and put trd adjustable shocks with trd springs. Not too crazy about how high it sits but my biggest problem is that the fronts have no travel at all. They sit on the bump stops. Messed up how those two components don't work together. Ive tried all sorts and nothing is working. So now I'm looking at other options.

Any one shed some light on the questions in the first post.

obviously the TRD shocks are shorter than standard, do you have them spaced up at the bottom??

The trd struts you have in now were they 2nd hand? Were you able to verify there condition when you put them in?

How tall are your bump stops? You should have cut the original bump stops shorter when fitting lowering springs. Leaving about an inch.

In my SS AE111 i replaced the struts with new factory Toyota ones and fitted lowering springs with new shortened bump stops about 5000km ago and I don't seem to have any problems with ride comfort or bottoming out. Could probably meet up sometime if you wanted to see what mine is like..

BC to make a set to suit the AE111 Levin.

The part that needs to be welded can be unscrewed from the rest of the coil over so there is no chance of the welding heat damaging the strut.

I emailed someone from BC in NZ and they said a set was about $1350.

Spaced? How and where? Im not sure i know what you mean. I see no room for spacing of any sort. On one of the struts i left 1 of the bumpstops off and the tophat comes all the way down. I can only see about 2'' of shaft between the body and the tophat where the bumpstop should be, and doesnt move any lower when i push on it. It all sits fine but too high with factory springs. Yeah those bc struts are the ones i was thinking of.
