Running engine into the "RED LINE" area?

Postby Tagged » Wed Jun 15, 2011 4:41 pm

So I've been thinking, 4AGE engines have their red line starting from 8k to 9k RPM.

When I drive (having fun to be exact) I go up to 8K at most, never driven it over the red line.

How bad exactly, is driving the engine into the red line area? What im saying here isn't "keeping the RPM in the red zone" but only "shifting in the red zone".

For example im not going at 100k/h on 2nd gear running at 9k rpm. Im just saying is it bad for the engine if I shift at maybe 8.5 or 9k rpm.

Thanks guys

don't expect it to last 4 ages if you do. (see what i did there?)

there's not really any point in reving that high, pretty sure they don't make any more power up there.

Revlimiter will prevent you going too high when accelerating. As long as you are not sitting on revlimiter you are fine. Just don't slam a gear too early when decelerating (thus forcing engine to do silly RPM) and you will be fine.

lol 4A-GE(s) ?? Yea I think you have a point there which I haven't thought about.

This arise another question for me though. I think the max power for 4age engines are at around 7k or 7.5k rpm right? (if I remembered right). So does this mean its best to shift at that rpm?

lol for example, my friend was driving a 1500cc lancer on motor way. At 130k/h, he shifted from 5th straight to 2nd................hahahaha and its a rent car = =

You should have a rev-limiter to prevent you from going too far. Otherwise I imagine you'll experience some sort of valve bounce and the car won't feel all that nice up there.

Personally I think it's fine. I use to redline my BZ Wagon virtually every time I drove it. Dittto with my Infini Familia. Both I owned for over two years and clocked over 200,000kms. Just make sure the car, gearbox etc. are all warmed up first.

You're just presumably putting more wear on the engine, although I think you'd be surprised at what an engine can take these days.

Also while I have no way of backing up this theory; with all my cars I've slowly built it up to taking to to redline over a few months and after a while the car seems to feel like it can cope better reving up there.

Not reving a car high enough and being in to high a gear is often worse, and puts more strain on an engine then reving it redline.

My mate reckons someone gave his stock blacktop 11000rpm at ruapuna once, and he gave it 9000rpm frequently

Rev limit on the black top ecu is around 8200rpm. Must vary a bit as mine has reached 8386rpm. Its pretty obvious when it kicks in. In fact if your shifting at 8000 I'm surprised you have not hit it already.

You can jsut hear the revlimit going form 1st to 2nd

Peak power is at 7800rpm so thinking about the power curve as a mountain with the peak at 7800rpm. Going slightly past it before shifting will mean your further up in the power when you engage the next gear as you have a faster road speed.

On a car with a peak power further away from the red line this would not apply.

Engine life is related to rpm
For example - making up some numbers...
- at 6000rpm full load engine wear might be X
- at 8000rpm full load engine wear might be 1.5X

Occasional 8000rpm bursts won't make much difference if you spend most of your driving below 3500rpm

On the race track where you rev between 5500rpm and 8200rpm engine will have a much shorter life.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

 Every 20v I've seen on the dyno makes peak power around 7800rpm, so 8k on the tacho is probably about right

I guess you just know when you have pushed it too far..... the steering wheel slams you in the face  You won't shift at 8.5k or 9k, limit is lower than that.

Haven't hit 8k for as long as I can remember, but used to do it all the time/ every time. Make sure the oil is @ the full mark and you should be sweet. Always when engine is warmed up.

haha thanks for all the replies guys. Looks like warming up the engine is quite important. And yes I always keep that in mind as well. I try
not to thrash it unless necessary when engine is cold.

You may have noticed a small measuring device on your engine named a dipstick?

I was going to mention not FULL as in to the top of the engine but didn't in the end. However, maybe I should actually mention it... do NOT fill it to the top!

If it will crank, it generally hydraulics and breaks ,should try it some time

take over 20 liters to do...

If it runs, it squirts oil out of places that you never thought an engine had.

Ive foolishly found first @ 90km/h. works out to around 12k. Nothing broke. Engine is 273,000km old of hard driving. Drag racing, track days, dynos. The engine has seen it all.

High RPM causes increased friction which causes increase wear.

Oil has been changed around 5000km and checked reguarly. Only thing that breaks easy is the gearbox... need my 4th one in 8 years of ownership

If you have a 4AGE and it's not at 8000RPM, you're doing something wrong. they hate being driven gently and end up all black and sooty if you're a nana.

And Re: Don't fill to the top comment. I agree, BUT:

A friend of a friend once filled his engine to the brim (memory says some kind of mitsi). He then proceeded to drive from Palmerston north to Ohope and it made it the WHOLE way.... leaving copious amounts of smoke in its trail and covering friends-mum's BMW in residue in the process.

Don't ask me how it worked.
