A guy at work sold his 01 (obviously the slightly older shape) 3.0 Lancaster with 70kms for $7k...drove damn well. IMO people are a wee bit off the 3.0 due to petrol prices - no idea what the economy difference is?

I would expect an average of 10L/100kms. To me the extra fuel consumption would be worth it. It should be no worse than the GT4 that you're also considering.

Have driven a couple of the 3L leggies, such nice car's. My brother owned one for a couple years and the flogged it up and down the Mt hutt ski access road. Loved it

Oh also if it has leather then it likely has the McIntosh stereo which freaking owns for a factory stereo

Drove the GT, and then took the 3.0 home overnight. Both awesome cars in there own way, was hoping that driving both back to back would help me choose, if anything its made it harder. The GT really brings out the innner hoon thats for sure, perhaps more fun to drive with the turbo, whereas the 3.0 is the ultimate lazy man cruiser (which is probably better 90% of the time), that still has some nice punch available when you need it.

The interior of the 3.0 is a nicer place to be with all the bells and whistles, so at this stage we are leaning towards that. The 3.0R seems a lot rarer as well, hundreds of GT's around, but bugger all 3.0's with teh full leather trim. Going to get it checked out and see if there are any issues etc and then make a decision.

Not really, you reccomended a Subaru over a Subaru, I was referring to a Legacy GT :wink:

the 3.0 will be cheaper to maintain than the GT. The turbo on the GT are very prone to having the oil feed line block up starving the turbo and killing it. $1200 for a 2nd hand turbo (currently have 1 in stock) or $4K for a new one. the 3.0 with bigger capacity will be a cruiser drive on the open road too.

Pulling my hair out here!
Its so bloody hard finding the perfect car! The 3.0R with full leather checked out perfectly mechanically, but reaked of tobacco smoke, and the GT's I've had checked so far have been pretty average mechanically.
Mainly been looking at Subies, but seems our budget of 15k either gets you a mint older shape twin turbo, or a average new shape turbo. Right on the border line there which is bloody frustrating. After driving a new shape Suby, its would be very hard to go for an older shape one, new ones just have such better interior build quality and do look nicer IMO, but most are higher in kms and hard to find a clean example.

Soooo, am almost going off the Subarus for now.
Apart from the GT4 or Altezza, any other options I should consider.

Needs to:

Look sportyish,
Reasonable power (ideally 200hp minimum)
Prefer a wagon (would consider a sporthatch though etc)
Decent boot space for a dog

Atenza/6's are almost there, just really lacking in the power department for a 2.3L.

I also do wonder about most turbos, I mean no one buys them to drive them slow, so most have had a harder life, and getting onwards of 100km it seems to be showing in most of the examples we have checked out. I know there are mint examples out there, just hard to find.

As for turbo cars and their usage, often the top spec cars only come turbo. You want leather seats etc, you need to get top model, which is often turbo'd. Not always about thrashing them, by the time they have reduced in price for younger people to buy them though i'm sure the chance of thrashing increases 10 fold. Parents have a Mazda 3 MPS, and it doesn't get thrashed at all*

*the rare times I drive it I put it to good use
