High fuel consumption...

Postby Grrrrrrr! » Sun Jul 24, 2011 10:12 pm

The lancia is drinking the benzino at a scary rate.. and i'm buggered if i can see an obvious reason.

Things i've done so far:
New thermostat
New plugs and leads
Injector cleaner
Compression test (~140psi on all four cyls)
Checked for vacuum leaks (found nothing but might look harder when te weather is nicer)

Apart from the fuel consumption its also missing at full boost at about 5k rpm, sorta surges a bit then clears and goes ok(ish).

Car doesn't have an o2 ssensor, so it can't be that.

Anybody got some ideas?

Running way too rich?

AFM or Map,

If it's AFM is it mechanical type with a flap etc, or electronic with no moving parts?

AFM, bosch jetronic-L type i believe, flappy sort by the looks.

Lancia 8v turbo engine in a thema engine code is 834c.000 if that means anything to you.
Might have to find my multimeter and measure the resistance across the meter, but not knowing what is good/bad readings makes it somewhat less than ideal.

Might look at replacing the coil soon too if i can't find something fun to replace it with.

Has the top been off the AFM at all?

If not the two things I would do first is get a pressure test on the intake with a smoke machine or similar,

and get some way of checking the mixture under load if there is no leak.

With the Bosch type AFM's you can get the lid of them and adjust the mixture quite easy by turning the tension spring wheel, a few clicks makes a big difference.

We do it quite often on the older Bmw's etc, but you need to have a gas analyser to know what you are doing and how far to go.

So.... work out the miss before just throwing parts at it?

Sure they're the right plugs in it? Fueling kinda miss under boost or a spark breaking down?

I'm guessing more tension on the spring = leaner? Might adjust it one click and see what that does. If it leans out and melts a piston I can live with that, It'll motivate me to buy something else or find a 16v motor to drop in instead.

Given the state the leads were in its a fair bet the coil/rotor/dizzycap need replacing anyway, so i'll do those for peace of mind, and they should be cheap enough.

Plugs were correct according to the online catalogue, but how accurate that is is questionable.

No idea how to tell the difference between types of misfire, all i know is its not pulling smoothly at high load.

So seems to run fine but stutters etc under load, ie when booting it or high rpms?
Coil on way out?

It'll be misfiring because it's running too rich. The plugs will be too dark looking.
You could take it for a blat, shut it off and pull a plug for a look.
