Turbo mounting questions

Postby FST4RD » Mon Jul 25, 2011 9:42 am

Hi all, had a thought about mounting a turbo... but thought it's worth checking out.

Can you mount your turbo with the compressor housing facing straight up? This would mean that the exhaust would exit straight down, the pipe between the exit of the compressor housing and the intercooler could be perfectly straight (as long as you mounted the turbo and intercooler in the right place), The you would have a 90 degree bend between the filter and the intake.

Maybe there's a flaw in my logic somewhere though?

I'm sure I've seen it done on a few Subies, so there must be a way around it?

make sure the drain is not sticking straight out for too far. Maybe even redrill it at an angle. Surely the oil pressure is enough to move it a little to get it flowing

Pretty sure Garrett recommend no more than 15degrees tilt otherwise oil restricts in the drain and they pop the oil seals

maybe you can do that but you need a scavenge pump for the oil drain.

Well my thoughts behind this were that instead of your dump pipe doing a 90 degree down and then anouther 90 degree under the car, you could do away with one of them making a slightly less restrictive exhaust. Same goes with the intercooler piping, you could do away with the 90 degree straight off the turbo to the intercooler meaning less restriction all round.

Does this sound right? Or am I just smoking too much crack

This

Just because there is a bend doesn't mean there is a massive restriction

Fair enough... then it could be potentially cheaper, saving on a mandrel bend or 2 then
