Gutting cat on gen1 sw20 turbo

How much of a PITA is it to do?

And how long would it take?

Is it safe to drive ~500kms open road trip with a blocked cat?
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.

Oh yeah it's a pain in the ass, the cat serves as a downpipe too.

easiest is to get an aussie downpipe.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Bugger, not the answer I wanted. How easy/cheaply/quickly can the aussie ones be sourced? Or am i better off stealing the one of the neighbours wrecked mr2 and getting a downpipe made up?

Buy an XS power downpipe, the one on my MR2 has survived for around 40,000km so far, got it from Driven Performance for quite cheap. Taking the cat off is a huge pain in the ass, enjoy!

I gutted my old cat converter with some help, only took a couple of hours out and back in again. This was with a hoist though.

pretty sure we took it off with the turbo then took it off while it was off the car... a hacksaw and a significant amount of swearing was involved.

If i were doing it again i would disconnect the turbo oil drain where it enters the sump... way easier than tryingto get the oil feed line off with it connected, just do an oil change at the same time :D

Actually you are probably right, if i hadn't have swapped the turbo it wouldn't have had the gasket on wrong, which wouldnt have made the turbo leak oil, which wouldnt have caused the smoke, which wouldn't have made me think my perfectly good engine was rooted and buy another one only to discover it was the turbo shitting oil out the exhaust when i dropped the engine :evil:

but to be honest, i don't think its as hard as these guys make out, as long as the nuts undo and aren't stripped. (unlikely :lol: )

6/7 or so on the turbo, 3 bolts on the bottom, and a couple for the bracket?

It all depends on how lucky you are i think, i had to saw through the bracket, and we were doing it on ramps in a cramped dark garage.

Doing it my current garage would be ok :D

Nah they're pretty easy....if you can soak them in CRC for a bit first it makes all the difference.
