Depends on car. I'm pretty unskilled behind the wheel but my ABS has/can be a real pain and trys to catch me out.

ABS braking is for emergencies. You know, the kind of stuff you aren't expecting at all. Like the van that pulled out in front of me with about 10 metres to spare, no indicators or lights in pouring rain. No ABS would have had me in the back of the van.

so they go and speed on gravel and ice and then while the paramedics give them oxygen wail on about why didint the ABS save them from binning their car into something much harder than it and how they are going to sue the car manufacturer as obviously this crash shows that the car is faulty! and then jump on fair go demanding a worlwide recall of all ABS cars as they obviously arent doing their job!

My car has ABS. I hope like hell I'll never need to use it. I'm not going to say I won't ever need to use it, that's just tempting fate. Plus I still have a long way to go before I can say I'm a great driver.

On a smooth flat road travelling in a straight line maybe a small percentage of drivers can do a better job than a decent ABS system.

Throw in any sort of curve or a sealed road surface with inconsistent grip levels (white lines etc. bend or any attempt at evasive action and there is no way a human can out do ABS on a due to the simple fact you have one pedal controlling four wheels. The ABS system controls each wheel individually and can sense what each wheel is doing and has a reaction time measured in milliseconds or less. You aren't that good, end of story.

Most ABS systems suck on gravel however.

It does give better stop distances. People dissing ABS is who are never had been with ABS equipped car in an emergency. I have and I would have been in the arse end of an Odyssey that was stopped on highway at end of passing lane that I enthusiastically approached.

Do you really think you can outperform ABS in emergency? Most likely you are delusional and should not be driving (not aiming at anyone here).

Static friction is much stronger than kinetic friction, ABS is trying achieve static friction, when you are skidding it starts as kinetic friction and then quickly transforms into lubricated friction (where lubrication is provided by molten rubber). Basically ABS does decrease stopping distance on non-loose surfaces (asphalt, concrete ie normal road), the only scenario where it would increase stopping distances is on loose surface (gravel, snow, sand, etc.). Yes, good racing drivers don't need ABS in races, even they cannot be always in race mode when they are driving on normal roads. Most of honest professional drivers would agree that they would rather have car with ABS than without on normal road.

I would like to see people who state that ABS is not needed, to try to steer around the obstacle while braking hard in their cars without ABS.
