Vehicle Check Engine No?

I'm looking at buying a manual SXE10 Altezza and have found one I like and is a good chance I will be buying it. I've done a Vehicle report check done this morning and on the details under Engine No, its says RUSTED (WTF).

Report has the following:

Vehicle Type: Passenger Car/Van
Body Style: Saloon
Chassis No: SXE10-0027232
Engine No: RUSTED ????

Would that of just been someone taking the piss when they registered the car when imported?

Ive seen that before,
the number is unreadable due to rust but is there.

Ah damit, was pretty keen on it to. Strange it got complied with Rust on it. Might have the vehicle checked out first before making a decision. Offer the owner even less now

Would it not just be the engine number on the block which is unreadable? Hardly an issue really?

would'nt it be easier reading engin no off the firewall. Pretty sure not all engines display the no on the block

Can you get it changed / updated?

I.e. you might be able to use it to knock a few hundred $$'s off, then update it so it doesn't put off any potential buyers.

I'd also get a mechanical check done on it - get a truer report on the condition & history of the car. It sounds like laziness when it was imported (rather then taking 10 seconds to pull out a wire brush).

the engine number on the firewall will only tell you the type, ie 3SGE etc.

the actual engine number is stamped onto the block, and will be something like 3S-1234567. and thats whats being referred to with the rusted business. which if its a cast iron block is not that surprising.

its also possible that its difficult to see and they took the easy way out.

rust on the engine is not of concern to the compliers, only chassis rust

yeah I've come across a few which have been 'UNKNOWN' or 'UNREADABLE' or something similar. The early imports often had the chassis number put down as the engine number, which is the case of my 1980 car which came in and was registered in 1988.

Engine no is stamped on block as well as on the build plate to tie the car to the engine (legally required in some markets) Not really uncommon to have the number on the block unreadable so don't be put off by it. Half the time the number on the build plate doesn't match the engine in the car due to engine swaps etc. Most people don't take much notice of them. LTNZ will update the number if you're willing to jump through hoops.

in the case of JDM market cars they don't have a record of the exact engine serial number on the chassis/build plate. I know Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and Subaru don't anyhow - just the engine type/code.

Sweet, owner has taken it for a AA check which had good results. I know they aren't fully reliable still better than nothing. Also passed a vtnz wof this morning. Still going to try and get some $$$ off

i havent seen anything later model than early 80's with it either.
