1ggte gen 1 and 3 head differences.

Postby Quint » Mon Sep 19, 2011 3:02 pm

'ello.
Acquired a gen 3 1ggte that was bubbling coolant (apparently). Pulled it down to do a leak down test and looks like cyl 1 is leaking, but not sure where too, smells like cracked head rather than gasket, imo.

So head has to come off. New head gasket + bolts :(

I have 2 gen3 heads and one off a gen1, i've rebuilt the gen1 head (prior) and would prefer to use it (no smoke on start-up wooo!) Question is, are they interchangeable (most likely) but are there any differences in the two that would mean I'd want to use the gen3 head (power).

While i'm here, any difference between the gte head and the ge? Got a 1gge that a gte head would go good on (got a spare setup to turbo it) anyone had any experience with this? Main concern that i have before checking the deck is the oil drain for the turbos.

From my experience with these motors, the 1G-GTE head is identical to all other, just the computer tuning, inter-cooling and injectors that changed mostly. I have a GA70 with a gen1 1G-GTE (converted from 1G-GE) and im running an after-market front mount intercooler and 2.5exhaust with base timing set @ 13deg and it pulls harder then all the gen3 GTE's I've been in. It's also able to rev out to ~8k rpm still pulling hard too?? I have a funny feeling that it may have the N/A camshafts in it when it had the conversion (didn't do this myself) as it really starts to get up and go at 4k, about the same time my 1G-GE used to.

I also think a turbo'd 1G-GE would be the ducks nuts! They are strong engines, overheated (BHG) one going to Hamilton over the Kaimai, still ot me to Hamilton and home (Opotiki in the BOP) and could start the next morning...brutal

1ggtes are strong i can vouch for that but they just arent 1jz and neva will be, im so over my 1g it just sits in the shed.

heads will be the same, n/a head doesnt have the oil feeds for the turbos.

bhg is common as, mine had 1, just planned head, new gasket, new bolts, tightened down ALOT more than factory specs and bulletproof ever since.

i wouldnt bother with n/a cams, toyota would have used them in the 1st place if they were better, they didnt spend millions of dollars developing motors just for fun.

n/a block wont have the oil drain in it so ud have to tap a return into the sump.

best answer... jz ;)

+1
I had a 1jz in my MA70 and now just rebuilding a 2jz. Once you pop, you cant stop.

The 1jz in the supra poops on anything 1g. Night and day difference

there is an issue with where the thermostat housing bolts on to the head, they can be made to fit. I'm pretty sure one runs m6 bolt holes and the other runs m-8 holes.

Also there is less room for the CAS (or dizzy). This all fitted fine on the n/a motor..

i'd say if you had both styles of thermostat housing you'd be fine to do the swap.[/img]

Na cams have 10% more lift as compared to turbo cams..
