cutting holes in parcel tray?

pretty sure the parcel shelf (metal part) is considered structural.
Is it possible to get the holes enlarged? or is this a definite no no?

in these types of situations, I've used a larger speaker ring and let the speaker basket taper into the hole.

the thing is that if i raise the speaker up too much i wont be able to screw it in, unless i take the back glass out.

Ive have warnings of wof sheets for the holes the previous owner had cut. But they didn't do anything about it (vtnz).

To get around removing the rear glass. I found the best option was to bolt/screw the speakers to some mdf spacers. Then from the bottom side (in the boot) attach the spacers to the parcel shelf, a few self tappers should do the trick.

Mate who brought my old EX Lancer thought he'd fit some 6x9's in the rear - cut the holes (factory 4" I think) to suit then failed the first WOF he took it for.

I'd do what Rob has mentioned if you really want to have 8" speakers. Plus looks tidier IMO have stock speaker covers.

Just comes down to the system that raises the boot. i guess this is for a Silvia? And don't they use torsion bars like a corolla? in which case they run across the parcel shelf and will hit the speakers if you mount them below.

Suppose you could always remove them though and use a stick to hold the boot open.

yeah, for s14 silvia.
Wont work underneath the tray and i think it would be abit silly having an 8 inch speaker sitting under a 6" hole.

I would prefer to keep stock grills if possible cause i wanna be all up in that.

Might just have to get some decent 6" junk to put in my trunk.

what do people recommend in the way of 6/6.5s these days?

Pretty sure you're allowed to modify speaker holes as long as its' at least 150mm from a seatbelt anchorage point? Might be more, I know you can't have structural corrosion/damage within 300mm of a seatbelt anchorage point. I had this with my AE101, I found that the parcel tray had been hacked up for 6x9s, took it to a VTNZ and they said it would need to be measured.

Some times it depends who you go to. My HQ got failed for this on the last WOF before I pulled it apart, it doesn't even have seatbelt mounts on the parcel shelf. It's good practice not to cut it either way.
