Postby deaf_rattle » Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:26 pm

Is a rattly cam chain something that can be fixed easily? or is it similar deal to replacing a cambelt?

It is not easier or cheaper than doing a cambelt. This wouldn't happen to be on a SR nissan motor during the first few seconds of start up?

Same thing happens on my S14. Only when I first start it up though.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Common fault on silvias, found the same thing with my 6 MPS, though I knew when I bought it (got my 2.5k off the price).

I'm part way through doing the job and am replacing the chain, tensioner and variable cam, I did find that it was the cam making the noise though.

No harder than a cambelt.

The SR18/20 nissans have a common problem with the camshaft oilers clogging up, more of a grinding noise than a rattle though...something to keep in mind.

2nded, when i was working as a machinist we used to have the cam oil rails ready to go with slightly larger holes drilled into them, because it was so common. Don't neglect oil changes on Nissan motors.

Changed the plugs. didnt make much difference.
Going to get the timing checked out next and replace the leads.
