Yeah 5 star, air bags to protect everything and side impact bars, motorsport chassis etc..

He is on his restricted so he cant have any of his mates in his car, which is fine as I dont think he has many friends.

I guess i saw it, fell in love with it not thinking that maybe it was not the best option for him.

BUT.. i would rather him have that then a 1980's car with no aiurbags and drum brakes. He did learn to drive on a 180hp hatchback from france.....

I guess its no different from a kid borrowing his mum or dads ford falcon or holden commodore..

Hahaha - have I got some great stories from when me & my mates use to borrow their parents falcons and commodores!

Any car for a 17 year old is cool - even a Rover 75. I quite liked the two door hatch MG put out (MG ZR?). Anyway - toyota club website - unless you posted a photo of an FX-GT or a diesel corolla wagon you were going to get flamed.

Just make sure he looks after it and if you find him driving like an ass - kick him.
Fuel & insurance on a 190kw V6 might be tough for a 17 year old to afford but I'm sure he'll love it none the less.

My Dad lent me $500 for my first car on my birthday (I only had $1k saved - tight ass for lending me the money... for my birthday), and it was a crappy 1989 honda prelude (2.0L si). All my mates thought it was wikkid and I use to run it off the clock down the motorway - cause that's what 17 year olds do (or did 10 years ago). If I have a son and he's anything remotely like me he'll be getting a diesel van. But there are some responsible 17 year olds out there so I wouldn't brand all of them.

Should suit you well.

I've never been given a car, would have been nice mind you. I think Elmo summed it up well.

Nothing wrong with drum brakes either , nor older cars. 3k gets a reliable car some even with airbags if thats a requirement. Something mid to late 90s too.

Brings back memories of high school back in 2000 having a car was a luxury that not many people had. My Holden Gemini wasnt completely uncool. Most people had nothing. These days if you don't have a ticked up turbo chromed car you're not cool. A shame IMO, older cars easily do the job of economical travel for people new to the roads.

$10 says if he wanted a WRX and this could be as fast as one then it will be raced against his mates WRX first chance he gets.

That's what I'd do if I was in his shoes and 17 again.

Does it have lots of airbags?

*edit* yes it does, thats good.

^ Yea I'm with elmo

I will admit I pranged my parents car when it was lent/semi given to me. Was a newish car at the time too and because I didnt have to earn it I dont think I had the respect needed.

When the time comes for me kids to get their first car (very long way away) they can fork out the coin for it (what ever it is) on the condition that it is only able to be brought home on a trailer. Then we can rebuild it together, coz you know, old cars are the coolest....

I think that I am at the stage in my life where I can treat him, times were not always so good, when we left SA, we came over with basically nothing and had to start again. We had 1 suitcase between me and my wife, i think i had 2 shirts and 1 pair of shorts. I worked hard for everything I have achievwed so I guess I dont wont my son to go thru what I went thru.

I still remember fleeing our home to move to SA, watching it get burned down cause it belonged to a white family.

Maybe i should have got him a land rover defender... atleast if he hits something hes going thru it

He works hard on the farm, helps me out and such and has never been paid for it. $12000 is not too much as a toyota corolla 2000+ is around the 10,000

I dont think any of his friends are that way toi race on the streets, but if he gets caught speeding he knows I will take it away from him.

First car $400 Mini Clubman 1100cc paid for by myself.

Like I suspect most people, I did some really stupid stuff when I was in my parent's car. Discovered that 1979 Honda Accord's will do 160kph. Christ knows what I'd have done to myself given access to a car with the amount of power that you've just given to your son.

I would suggest that you get him enrolled in some advanced driver training, and possibly some motorsport events. That way he will be better educated in how to control the vehicle you've provided him. Personally I'd not give a teen access to anything quicker than a 1300cc Echo, but that's just me

damn! and heres me thinking i did ok getting a AE111 BZ-G for my first car! :P

nice choice i reckon - apparently the V8 version while prehistoric looks like a lot of fun and while others hate the look i for some reason quite like it - with the 190KW V6 its sort of an old person eater - because someone in their falcodore would see it and think "oh crap and old person" and then shit blood as it gives them a run for their money at the lights :D

Racism is not right, just think about what you are doing to this car and think what if someone did this to my car would it hurt its feelings?

Weren't you the one hating on Subarus? :P

Any I think it's a nice car to be giving your son. Only thing is, if I were given that car instead of my corolla, then I would probably be afraid to get my habds dirty. Wouldn't wanna wreck it...

I was discussing this with someone a while ago... about what cars folk had at my school. Times were awesome, I had mates with hot Mini's a couple of slammed Anglia's (one had a home grafted Pinto in it's engine bay), Datsun's, Mk1 and 2 Escorts aplenty, KE20 and 30 Corollas, a couple of Starlet's and of course my old Alfa. $&#$% yeah schools had waaaaay cooler cars back then.

I would have loved to have been given a car... I did have to fork out for my first one, but it WAS a $500 Alfa Romeo and I was only 16. My old man put in the time and effort teaching and helping me rebuild it instead, so I guess you could say I was gifted some of the car to some extent. Finance wise it was all handled by me, (and a fortuitous insurance claim against a trucking company) however.

Be interesting to see what insurance will be like on the ZT!
