Ta22 sill profile

Postby hsmidy » Wed Oct 19, 2011 9:52 pm

Bit of an odd ball question but does anyone know if any other toyota shares the same lower outer sill profile as a ta22?

yup.. TA23 8) and also some of the RA celica models as well if I'm not mistaken.
If you have some rusty sills that need replacing then your best bet is probably to get some new ones made up. Would be basic work for anyone with a sheet metal bender. just give them a small section of you existing sill so thet can match up the profile

have a look thru some of the projects here
http://www.1stgencelica.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4

Quiet a few have shown how to fix the rot from patching, to full sill replacement.

hey thanks for the reply, ill have a look through that link, might have some trouble finding a portion of the sill that is complete to get a sill profile.

was hopeing i could find a prefab on in nz that could be used but yeah , not many people making them for the early celica's.

thanks again

hmm sounds like you have fun times ahead.. well worth the effort tho.

you could probably get away with making a template out of a block of wood or something, cut it to shape to fit inside your sill. Then get someone to bend up some steel sheet to match it. It's only a sill so doesn't need to be 100% as they would have been a little off from factory, and if you're doing both sides they'll look the same anyway.

Good luck :)

There is an easier way than that. Take a cutting disc to one of the old sills (an area that still is solid metal) and cut out a section 1-2 inches wide which shows all the profiles there is. Grab a few measurements of what you need and head down to your local sheetmetal engineering shop. They should be able to bend it up easy peasy, often it works out cheaper than the pre-made sections and if the shop is good its usually a better profile.

You got pics of where the sills used to be? Sounds like a pretty bad case! 8O

That was just the first link I found. There will be plenty more. Likely still a good option to look out, shipping out of the states possibly cheaper anyway. Worth looking further though

yes i have seen them but i can imagine the shipping and then the risk of them getting damaged in transit...would probabley work out cheaper to get them made.

I'll get round to doing a members project thing this weekend, i might be able to get a profile cut off the sill will have to double check .

Price shipping before condemning it as an option. And shipping is the senders responsibility

Dad got some similar parts shipped from the UK for his Jag recently, shipping wasn't that horrific from memory, although shipping out of UK always seems better than the states.

Hmm I'm going to oz at the end off january.. wonder if I could stash a couple in some ski bags

just tried getting some wheels out of the us.. $150 usd per rim, and the rims were only $50 each, but oz is just over the ditch so surely can't be that horrific.

Thats the strange bit, my boss is buying a heap of parts and businesses on Ebay in the US are a lot better for shipping than a couple of aussie places stocking the same parts. Thats what I mean, just check before you rule it out. As Alex said, UK stuff isn't always that bad either

Yeah shipping from the states is not that bad.
it's crazy how often you can buy parts and ship them from the states cheaper than buying them here.
Case in point, 24" bikes wheels, x2 cost me $75 usd shipping for $500 all up. Same set in nz if you can find them is about $6-700

Entirely depends on the vendor, Two's R Us wanted $18US delivery for a $15US sticker  yet T3 was $30 for a coilover kit, camber plates and RCA's
