RWD options for 2GR-FZE

Postby cogent » Wed Nov 16, 2011 5:54 pm

Long story short, we have a TRD Aurion 2GR-FZE and we want to run it in a north-south config for a race car build. What are our options in regard to this? I'm not familiar enough with the intricacys of mixing/matching boxes and engines to efficiently research it, although it looks like a hilux 1g bell housing will bolt up?

V160 would be great but I don't like our chances of finding one, how hard would it be to adapt a rb25det or fd3s gearbox? We're after a strong, reliable performance orientated box without going to a straight cut race box.

Any ideas?

v160, you would need to chop off the "bellhousing" part as its all one part with the gearbox.

the 300zx 5speed is a very strong box, otherwise id go r154.

I guess my question is more around what is the usual process for mating a gearbox to an engine, and with regards to the 2gr what bolt together options might we already have?

Have a read here, its a 2gr going into a MR2, and uses a 3s bellhousing and box..

working with that logic you should be able to use anything that came s series bellhousing, which include w series, also the altezza j160 (probably not the strongest, but I am sure there will be more options out there)

Otherwise you will be up for building a adapter plate or bellhousing..

w57 with a S series or C series bell housing or try a J160 Altezza box and see how it stands up, depending on what it is going into, it MAY handle some abuse.

Search www.Toymods.org.au forum, pretty sure there was at least one RWD version there.

Some late model (2002 onwards says wikipedia) Hilux have a 1GR-FE - the 4litre version of the 2grfe.
Go find bell and gearbox from one of these maybe

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Altezza boxes are stronger than people give them credit for, if you keep oil changes up and don't be stupidly harsh on it.

Mines been on a turbocharged 3S at 200kw for about 50,000ks and 275kw for about 15,000ks with a couple track days in there and never given me problems.

But have known a couple not be so lucky, so could be worth giving it a go as they are relatively cheap (compared to r154) and if it's an easy fit.
