Hi TS'ers

I have recently been looking into buying a dual air temp gauge so I can log pre and post intercooler temps at the track in my jza80 na-t.

I have tried to avoid adding too many gauges to the car, but I do have the important ones, as Im genuinely interested about the engines vital signs, and look at it as a good investment when compared to the cost of rebuilding an engine.

Im not doing any endurance events, normally only 10-15 minute sessions at track days, and only running relatively low boost on a small T4 turbo, but I wouldnt be surprised to see a rise in IAT's given that Im only running a generic (read: chinese) 3" intercooler.

Alot of the gauges I have found so far have been intended for the aviation industry, and there are alot of places that buy the units in bulk and have their respective companys logo put on them to rebrand them, and bump the price up. I have contacted the main company (Davtron) and they told me to contact the NZ distributors whom I have emailed 3 times, to no avail.

Will be interesting to see, fwiw on any of the cars I've done tuning on - Chinese intercooler or not - I've not seen anything running <20psi of boost going over 30degree IAT on the track. The IATs are typically at their worst when pulling in to stop AFTER going for fang :)

I tend to agree with what you say, but the 'anal c@*t' in me wants to see the facts before I can relax hehe.

I didnt mention it in my first post but ever since I have been na-t, my factory IAT sensor has been mounted in my intake pipe between the air filter and the turbo inlet, and as such, is only reading ambient at all times.

When I was running off the WG spring at 8psi, given our cool climate, I knew with an reasonable amount of certainty that the extra heat generated by the air being compressed would be easily taken out by the core, but ever since I increased it to 12psi(and possibly more very soon), I have started to wonder exactly how much more heat its adding, given its only a small turbo.

I want to do a big data logging session to put up some empirical data comapring the performance of a 3" ebay core at certain boost pressures, and if I find that my IAT's are getting too high, then im going to buy a 4" ebay core and run the same pressures next time Im at the track.

It may or may not help others wondering what size intercoolers they need, but atleast it will be some real world data to look at, rather than typical forum speculation and guess work hehe. I might also look at putting some deflectors inside the hot side end tank to help scoop some air to the upper section of the core, as its proven that a large contributing factor to the ebay cores poor performance is the end tank design, or lack of, should I say ;)

I have got an EGT gauge too, but havent decided where to install it yet.

One option I have thought of is buying another EGT probe and having one installed in the #6 runner, and one post turbo in the downpipe, and switching between the two to work out the correlation between the data gathered. Then I can remove the sensor in the #6 runner to avoid any possible melting of it, and the subsequent parts flying through the turbine, but still have a clear idea of the EGT's

I was going to get one of these, you can buy a second sensor for them and set them up to alternate between displaying the two temps

Thanks for the link, Malcolm. That looks perfect and far cheaper than the other options I have looked into.

I have sent the vendor a question asking how much a second sensor is, and what the procedure is to flick between the two readings, as its something I would want to do simply while driving.

Also I wonder if extending the wires on the sensor will change its calibration, as its only 3m long so would need to be extended to get inside the cabin.

They actually have instructions and auctions for extra sensors if you dig a little. Also, a 3m cable will probably be plenty long enough, but since it's a digital signal from the sensor (from what I can tell) it shouldn't change calibration at all if you extend it, so long as you don't have too much signal strength loss
