different buyer market.

A new car buyer is looking at new cars and a total package, we don’t care if you can buy a 10k Japanese’s import that is faster, we owned that old hat Japer 10 years ago when they were relevant and remember how bad they were back in the day.

I think you really have to drive a decent new car to get a fair idea of what they are like, and im not talking mums 2010 Suzuki Swift or Dads VE Commonwhore as a lot of people base new car experiences on, if you want an idea of how cars have evolved in 20 years compare 1980 Toyota Corona to a 2000 Toyota Altezza, you can crunch numbers all you want but there is more to a car than 0-100 times and horse power, there’s chassis stiffness, drivability, design, build quality, material quality, safety, comfort, noise levels, fuel economy and above all chassis engineering.

I actually think this is where the FT-86 will fail to deliver the experience of the AE-86, modern cars have improved 100 fold in 20 years but one key part of why the AE86 is so enjoyable to drive is its card board box flexi chassis and body, it makes driving slow exciting, in a modern equivalent that is a safety cocoon with low noise levels and big window pillars you are going to have to drive a lot faster to get a simple thrill.

As a comparison I own a 1985 Toyota Corolla NZGT and a brand new Hot Hatch Equivalent, whilst the Corolla is shit slow and handles very averagely (read bad) it is exciting even at low speeds, at say 90-100 on a back road it is fun, I would have to go 140kph in my new car to get the same sense of excitement.

Don't go selling your AE86's just yet, biggest regret I ever had was not buying one when they were realistically priced and not riced wank drift specked like most are now.

Subaru Version. They say it rebodied but it looks near the same to me.

Apparently we wont see this until they come in as used imports as the RWD is not fitting with Subaru NZ "total Control" "All AWD" brand profile in NZ.

Oh how I hope STI throw a turbo on one. Please, please!

Just had a thought.

START hoarding subaru engines now. The prices look like they will be on the rise
I'm guessing people will be swapping EJ20T's into this soon.

Yea had thought that! Problem would be the cars electronics, i'm sure some clever cookie boy will have already come up with some re programming solutions!

GT86 + STI EJ20T + decent wheels and tyres = Mean Machine.

Really? Though Subaru changed their slogan from 'all wheel drive' to 'confidence in motion'. Could speculate as to it being a precursor to this car being made.

Yea something like that, all I was told is that this car did not fit in NZ Subaru range etc..

Would like to see Subaru throw an AWD system in it and use it in the WRC.

Well part of their design plan etc was for the car to be easy to modify.

Hence keeping standard mounting position for EJ20, removable dash for rollcage, etc.

So I'm sure they've made accomodations for engine swaps to be as easy as possible, heopfully that means seperate ECUs for everything on independant systems, rather than all tied into the engine ECU.

Imagine if an EJ20 turbo loom just plugged straight in... hah!

would be awesome.

Does anyone notice how tyres/wheels and wheel offset look wrong on test cars from pics above?
As if they purposely put narrow wheels/tyres to reduce grip.

Let me blaspheme: I would love to see this in turbo 4WD with subaru badges.

Would need to push the engine pretty far forward from its existing position to fit a 4WD box. Sad to say but cant see that happening.

Would love to be wrong though :D

In a WRC application it would run a 1.6 anyway so whole drive train would be bespoke. Hope they do it!

Yep that's exactly what they have done, it runs the same "green party approved" tyres as a Toyota Prius, they are a tyre designed foremost for fuel economy.

A decent performance tyre and wider wheels will have it going around corners faster.. But fast is not always as much fun as sideways!

Good News Everyone!

Quote: Subaru managing director Wallis Dumper has ruled on the BRZ sports coupe: "It will be in New Zealand next year. It's a good car."

Dumper decided to include the rear-drive BRZ in his line-up of all-wheel-drive vehicles after meetings at Subaru headquarters in Japan last week.
