If you look at the trend, the average age of cars in NZ has been going up since frontal impact laws were introduced back in 2001. It restricted supply which increased prices, resulting in us holding on to our existing cars longer as we couldn't afford to replace them.

When I was in high school we were all picking up (nice) cars under 10 years of age for as little as $5k-$8k. I made money on my BZ-Corolla after two years and they're still selling for more then what I paid for it 7 years ago.

The UK and most other european countries are also cheaper then us (at least when I was there last). Yes I understand it's in part due to sales volumes, but it doesn't make the statement any less true.

The reason our cars are so old is because of these sorts of laws. It pushes prices up, so we end up holding onto our cars for a lot longer.

These laws don't make newer cars more expensive. We are still buying them from the same market in japan/whereever at the prevailing market prices.

Replacing your 1996 car with a 2000 car would still drop the average closer to under 10 years.

But if you import a 2000 car in 2012 will you also scrap it in 2012? Or will it still be on the road in 2018 when it is an 18 year old car bringing the average age of our cars up?

In ten years time there will already be a f#ck-ton of R35s in NZ, no need to import more, especially if they are not capable or meeting decent emissions or safety standards.

There is every need to import. They're a $&#$% cheaper to import than buy from a dealership or trademe.

If they wana crack down on emissions, police need to start pulling over more cars that smoke. I'm sick of being pulled over for being to low, while grandama mary goes past in her 1980 323 that hasnt been maintained since she broughti t, smoking more than huntly power station.

You're obviously a $&#$%. In ten years time, dealers will still put a stupid mark up on cars, and dickheads on trademe will still want to much.

Now, 5 years ago, ten years time..
Example, my R34 cost me 7K, including shipping. At that time, dealers were asking 14k+ and even on trademe private they were 10K+.

My M35, all up including shipping, on road, wheels and sounds it cost me 10K... At that time dealers wanted 17K+ and trademe private 14K+...

So in ten years time.. YES importing will still be cheaper.

Of course dealers are more expensive, they have risks to cover and are in it to make a profit. How much cheaper would either of those cars been if they'd turned up with a blown HG or turbo seals etc? And you can still import the decent sports cars privately under SIV.

To cut it short: The law has passed, no more old shitters being imported, suck it up.

No, it's not rubbish at all. I didn't say beneficiaries, I said beneficiaries and other low life who won't put themselves in a position to afford a better car. And this block is larger than you know.

I was at the forefront of the import influx into NZ during the mid/late 80's. Initially it was just a few sports & luxury models you either could not buy here or that were unreasonably expensive i.e. RX7, 280Z, Prelude from Japan, BMWs from South Africa & Jags etc ... from UK. There was some justification for this trade but then the flood gates opened and eventually we were importing 1300 4 speed Mazda Familias with plastic carpet and wind up windows, because they were cheap. As if there weren't already enough cars to fill this market already here.

If the age is increasing it has nothing to do with the restrictions placed in 2001. Supply has not dwindled and neither has it become more difficult to obtain finance ... nor has the market become any less competitive.

New cars may well be cheaper in other places (although I'm not sure that's universally so) but I doubt that's the case with the used market. I'm presently costing a car in Europe and the value there is the same in Euro as it is in NZ$ here, so roughly double the price.

As for car imports, doesn't worry me as it doesn't affect the market of cars i'd be looking at, so pull up the ladder jack.

Could you not just leave the rego on exemption renewing the exemption yearly? can be done online easily, costs nothing and only has to be done once a year. That's assuming the car hasn't already been de registered here. Are there any checks from the NZTA for cars being exported that has them removed from the register on departure?

These cars are meant to be pulled up in wofs. And nothing like following a diesel that makes you put your windows up to stop the smoke coming into the car

At the end of the day we are a puny little country creating sweet $&#$% all emissions so the law is pretty meh.
We are still going to put out the same amount of crap in a year as I'm guessing some of the bigger countries do in a month.
