ae85/6 manuel steering question

Postby shihad » Mon Dec 05, 2011 11:20 am

ok so i brought a whole manuel steering conversion to convert my ae85 from power steer to manuel rack.
column rack crossmember.
its all cool beans but i found the intermediate rod to be the same length as my power steering.my understanding is that the steering columns are the same but the slight difference in height between the two rack setups is made up in the intermediate rod.so when i tried putting it back in it was 2 short.so my question too all you regular grease monkeys is am I correct?
do i need another rod or
are the columns different and I should just stop being lazy and swap the steering columns over and this will solve the issue.

The guy who sold me the part is nothing short of a legend and is going to send me the rod out of his new acquired manual steering ae85.however I want to make sure that im 100% in needing the part I dont want to waste his time.

when i did the conversion the most economical solution was to replace the steering column

Hey Shaun, not sure if this is any help, but took some measurements off the power steering setup I had out today, you might be able to compare to that manual steering column & see if they any different, or if swapping them will solve your prob. Excuse my awesome MS Paint graphics

the steering columns are different, and not easily mixed and matched.

i dont remember too clearly now, but you may also need another criteria, height adjustment - as in, there are four types of column (power and non, power adjust and non) and if you have power adjustable, you need manual adjustable.

maybe.

dont quote me on that.
