2E running rough

Postby nibblesbro » Tue Nov 01, 2011 4:11 pm

hi, I've got a '89 5 door starlet with the 2E-LEU motor in it, and its running rough as, stalls when i try to accelerate and when it does go it feels like its missing.

Have changed the head and cambelt, help?

Could be lots of things but check the rotor/dizzy cap, and that the ballast resistors are plugged in properly, map sensor is connected up etc.

Its a downdraft carb on it not a side draft which is the one that normally causes all the troubles.

I did the cambelt on this car a few weeks ago when the head was replaced and it was running ok then. Didn't do the timing or check the carb adjustment so could be that.

Also as above with dizzy cap and rotor nibs

Plugs, leads, timing, airfilter etc, basics first. Then check the dizzy, make sure the mechanical and vacuum advance both operate (done a few with seized mechanical advance counterweights and shaft)

When the head was replaced was the head and block straight? was the head cracked? Just because its just been done doesnt mean it doesnt need to be looked at, same as the cambelt (things happen, even pro's make mistakes), Ive spent a lot of time on jobs thinking "nah thats just been replaced", only to find out someone more senior to me has stuffed it up.

Another thing to check, if its the downdraft carb, shine a torch down the carb (motor not running) and watch while the accelerator is pushed to the floor to make sure the accelerator pump is operating, if its not working it will be very hesitant when taking off and if you snap the throttle it may die as well.

sorry is a 2E-LU, downdraft carb with all the vacuum hoses attached, as rob said he did cambelt and we replaced the head - had it checked for cracks and warpage - head is all good, just finding after its running for a bit it starts stuttering like its not getting enough fuel, cant find the fuel mixture screw on the carb to adjust

Wouldn't be something silly like a vacuum hose connected in the wrong place on the carb or manifold or not conected at all. Sounds almost like it's got a big vacuum leak?? Had this same trouble at work when i quickly did a tune on one and forgot to plug one back in.
Failing that fuel blockage for your stalling trouble?? Could pay to pull the carb off and see if you can either clean it and maybe try get a rebuild kit for it. Also had to do this with friends suzuki 4wd that ran real rough and chugged away when it was hot, fresh gaskets and diaphrams and all good

Check the Vacuum Advance. How is it on WOT? If its still missing id be looking at the Carb float. If its not idling make sure there is power going to the idle valve and check to make sure your vacuum advance is fine. Like Stu said could be a lot of things.
