Does anyone have the good oil on understanding toyota transaxle codes.

More specifically the diff codes,

For example, a common one is C56-04A (open) vs C56-04C (lsd),
As far as I can tell, C relates to gearbox family, 56 relates to the different spec'd ratios or final drive? 04 relates to Diff pinions, and the A or C relates to diff type (Open vs type of LSD)

I have come across similar for the S series gearboxes,
S54-04A, S54-06A, and S54-06D.
So I assume the S54-04A, shares the same diff (size?) as the C56-04A.

S54-06A, has a larger diff (open) and S54-06D, has a larger (than 04A) and lsd diff.

What I am keen to find out is, what are the Diff ratios (between 04A, and 06A) and what specifically do the letters for the diff code signify? (ie is A - open, B - viscous LSD, C - Torsen LSD, D - Helical LSD ???)

Neither of which quite explain the last identifier - (ie 04A, 04C, 06A, 06D)

Torsen and Helical are the same thing :wink:

I think I had it worked out back in the day but I've forgotten now I'm not dealing with it all the time

But the Letter is definitely telling you what type of diff it is. A is definitely open. And I'm pretty sure C is Helical/Torsen

Cheers Rev, helical for D was a guess as there is S54 box in a front cut celica on trademe with a helical lsd with the 06D diff code.

the -04 -06 etc is the diff ratio in the box, never seen any chart as to what they equate to, i would assume each gearbox series would need its own chart.

Yeah varies from series to series and a lot of the possible combinations have no actual meaning other than being sequential numbers/letters referencing a list of possible options for that gearbox/final drive and may not necessarily mean the same thing when used in the same combination on another gearbox/final drive.

From the ST20# Celica series they had these, not too sure about MR2's

SS-I
SS-I 1994-1999
S54-04A LSD type: none

SS-II
SS-II (1994-1997)
S54-06A LSD type: none

SS-II Superstrut edition (1994-1995)
E56-04C LSD type: Viscious (I need more references to 100% confirm '04C', but does have viscious LSD)

SS-II BEAMS (1997-1999)
S54-06A LSD type: none

SS-III
SS-III Superstrut (1995-1997)
S54-06D LSD type: Helical

SS-III Superstrut BEAMS (1997-1999) same as 1995-1997
S54-06D LSD type: Helical

GT-Four
GT-Four 1994-1999
E154F- 08B
Centre differential: Viscous
Rear differential: Torsen

TRD
TRD Mechanical LSD I
To fit all ST202･203･206･207 (S54-###) 1994-1999 Superstrut or McPhearson strut. Factory equiped with a Helical lsd or no lsd.
41301-ST804

TRD Mechanical LSD II
To fit all ST202･203･206･207 (E56-04C/###) 1994-1995 Superstrut Factory equiped with a Viscious lsd only.
41301-ST000

Both S54-06A/D have the same Final Drive: 4.176:1 (via partno.'s)
The E56 has the Final Drive: 3.944:1
The S54-04A Final drive I dont know

its R151F not P151F, same box i used in my JZN130 surf. A02B SHOULD be LSD, although not sure if 2 spider or 4 spider. to be a surf and with the late type codes it has to be a #ZN185 series.

yeah it'd be sweet.

that is the better box, the R150F has a shorter 5th gear than the 151 so you pull more rpm at 100kph

Yeah - different fwd gearboxes have different final drive ratios....

From memory Corolla C series gearboxes are 4.3 final drive ratio
Starlet C series boxes have maybe a 3.9 ratio

Why?

The Starlet runs a smaller diameter tyre from factory so it has a ratio that will make the engine revs lower when cruising
Popular swap for starlet fans is to get the corolla final drive ratio so its easier to give the car a thrashing!
