Not specifics to race tracks, I just view it as you should have the least possible impact on your neighbours. Obviously that needs to be balanced against the public good for airports, roads etc. I live in a rural area and accept that part of the rural environment is harvesting activities which mean certains time of the year I will get woken by machinery, have to drive around tractors, hear bird scarers etc. Generally though the impact is only localised and short term, leave your bird scarers on overnight though (when they are innefective and illegal to operate) and you will get a pissed off phone call about it. A speedway in the middle of a major residential area adversely impacts a lot of people, I expect long term it will innevitably be forced out.

I hope not, things like the speedway add character to auckland (something it has generally lacked over the years) but the few things remaining like western springs and recent upgrade of wyndham quarter with the trams running again make it a bit more interesting/nostalgic

Cue Baypark - closing due to being part of a residential area. Moves out of town then town builds next door and creates noise restrictions for the speedway

That was the case for them, right?

The point is though is it is an activity that impacts outside it's own boundaries. The speedway local to me was proactive and objected to the development of farm land next to them, limiting it to a commercial area (with onsite residences above the businesses) with no rights to object to noise. The local port did similar, having a residential development forced to put in double glazing and limit noise complaint criteria. They also bought up a number of houses nearby and resold with noise covenants on the title. Basically you either need to accept that you will need to move further and further out or take control of enough area around you to protect your future operations.

In Christchurch 1 of the "white" gangs (Harris gang from memory) won lotto, not once, but twice. They bought a nice house in Westmorland (pretty upmarket area). The residents didn't want them in the neighbourhood so pooled their money and bought them out.
Perhaps if the residents want the speedway gone they should pool their money and approach the council?

I agree that if you want to have these sorts of facilities you need to consider what sort of impact its having on the surrounding area.

What I don't get is why you would build/buy next to or close to a speedway or racetrack then complain about the noise.
If you build on know natural spill way then expect to get flooded if theres massive rain sort of thing.

You mean all the tenants of the properties? Going by what was said above anyway it sounds like mostly rentals. Which could possibly be a case of the properties being cheaper to buy than other areas due to the speedway. I have power pylons nearby, perhaps I can lobby to have them moved. Lets ignore the fact the cost of property anywhere near power pylons is less than areas that have none.

Have some cake and eat it? :)

Someone just needs to grow a set of balls and change the RMA, to clearly state that existing activities have existing use rights that are unextinguisable, except by act of parliament (maybe even requiring a super-majority), if they have been ongoing for more than 20 years.

Its the way it should be anyway, but there's too many soft cocks in parliament that don't have the balls to tell the greens and other constant whingers to get lost.

Have zero sympathy for Western Springs whingers, they knew it was there, so put up with it.
