If pressure was equal at both sides it wont flow. The muffler will be sectioned so the gasses will flow straight into the turbo then out the other side into the actual muffled section (if it even has any)

Yes it will. The density increases the volume decreases. This shifts the whole efficiency out of the window.

The turbine and compressor are designed for specific density/volume/flow, and "geared" to be most efficient at specific parameters. The simplest example is pitch of a blade on a propeller. A hyperbole example is comparison between boat propeller and air plane propeller.

figured there might be some trickery inside to make sure things went where they were wanted but didn't want to assume - this is the fail thread afterall...

Say 1 litre of air goes into the engine, it comes out hot and takes up 5litres of space, so you have 5L of air turning the turbo blades.
As the exhaust gasses cool they shrink, so at the back you now only have 3 litres of air to turn the blades.

You could counteract it buy using different blade and housings etc etc though.

(And the number above are probably nowhere near accurate but give you the idea)
