Sometimes handing in the plates gets you out of backpaying, not so good if you want to keep the car though.

I think this used to be the rule - I saved my ass about $200 by surrendering the plates on a car with a year's rego due. Unfortunately, it's not anymore, I sold a shitheap E30 to a wrecker with 6 months owing and still had to pay the overdue reg when I turned in the plates.

Anyway, sounds like you need to get on top of your vehicle licensing! As you can see I've been screwed more than once by being slack, so now I make sure I always immediately put my car on 12 months exemption if it's off the road. You can do it all online at nzta.govt.nz so there's not really any excuse

No direct issues with handing in plates to avoid rego myself, but plenty of mates who have. It seemed to be up to whoever you dealt with as to if you had to pay or not, no idea if they have tightened up or not but as late as 6 months ago one car had 11 months rego wiped with plates handed in. Prior to that had one only 4 months over had to pay.
Moral of the story? Try not to find out yourself.

I thought you could hand in plates at a post office, turns out you can't

So I gave up and did it over the phone with nzta, said the plates were crushed with the car

You will always have to pay the back reg, no matter where you hand it in. Changed couple years ago off the top of my head.

Uh oh, you just reminded me about the 2 hilux rego's I have on hold.


We had a ee90 parts car for the wifes little basher, the wife took the plates in to dereg the car, the young girl (apparently a trainee) took the plates and said she would take care of it. A month later we get a letter saying your rego is still over due, call ltsa and find out its still live. The wife goes back in to find out whats going on, apparently when she handed the plates in first time we wouldnt have had to pay (2 months over I think), a month later its over the threshold (however long that is) and we had to pay

Im sure in the past ive just changed the licence type to 10 class a or 11 class b and only paid around $40 to bring it up to date, hen put on hold again.
I know there was something recently about this by ltsa, i still have 3 vehicles on hold on class b licence

So your rego was out of date, you called up and got the class changed to a cheaper one and only had to back pay at that cheaper rate?
Sounds too good to be true!

No i went into post shop and filled out the rego form, i didnt ask them otherwise they usually say you cant

Last time i tried was about 8 monts ago

Get usual rego form, look at exempt classes i use B code 11 from memory and fill out the rest as usual

I know they were cracking down on vehicles with farm rego that were registered to residential addresses. That wont bother you with your new place tho.

There was something about ATV reg as well, now enforced as only being for ATV's and not cars iirc, and whatever class it was you could put your vehicle on to transport it for repairs to/from garages is no longer available - you just have to roll with reg on hold and hope the cop believes you that you are driving to an appointment when/if you get stopped. (Make an appointment to back your story up)
