yes getting smashed at the lights by people movers is ok if you are driving a sub 2k POS, but in something you just dropped 60k on?

I'm sure everyone here knows that you can't compare used to new on prices. Smae goes for the RX8 argument. Wait until this car is the same age as a 2003 RX8 and then see how the price compares ;)

I don't like the price.

The price hasn't been released for NZ yet... All Subaru have said is that it's UNDER $60K, they haven't said how far under...

It's made for the old lady commuter, but they market it like it's the next big thing for 'racers'.

Fair enough if that's your opinion, I understand the 200hp isn't alot, but when you take the weight into account, it's a decent power/weight ratio. Not to mention an old lady would have a very hard time eve getting into a car this low![/quote]

You know it's not Toyota getting back into sports cars because they would've at least made an attempt! (an attempt is coming at Nissan with something as wild as the amazingly successful GT-R). I personally think Toyota and Subaru knew after the GT-R, they weren't going to be able to compete with such a car (in terms of sales, looks, performance and technology wise - at this point), so they are making out that they weren't targeting that market anymore.

You would have to be stupid to try and compete with the GTR. Look at the problems Nissan has had when they first released it... Trying to Engineer something with that performance at that cost WILL require cutting some corners, and Nissan did this, eg. with the gearbox... Toyota wouldn't put their reliability reputation up for something like that.

Like someone said; you'd have rocks in your head if you buy one new as in a year or two the value would be halved (or even less)! I'm starting to like them more, but don't see anything special. They are going a bit OTT with praising these cars for some reason...

This is exactly the reason you can't compare used and new cars

Not sold, especially at the ridiculously inflated price for essentially a new MR2 (no homo, MR2, no homo). In saying that, the MR2 cost around that new anyway, didn't it?

Once again, we don't know the exact price yet, all we know is that it's UNDER 60k

I'm fairly sure that if Toyota wanted to, they would build something that would blow the doors off a GTR. And being as big as they are they could afford to loose $$ on them, so could sell it cheaper.

Lexus = Toyota. Toyota GT86 = Subaru BRZ. Subaru = Lexus?

A new RX8 is no where near $60k? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/mazda/rx-8/auction-451809950.htm

I have done some research and figured out the my 1990 SW20 MR2 G-Limited was 65k when new. It has power steering, windows, mirrors a tape deck. Not exactly a fast car but it's fun. I wouldn't pay that much for either my MR2 or an 86 new. The 86 would be a fun car to drive but would be nice to have a bit more power for some people. I'd be happy with 200hp personally in either car but the fastest car I have driven properly is my MR2.

This is exactly the reason you can't compare used and new cars

Unless you buy brand new cars with a different kind of money to second hand ones, anything within the $60k price bracket is absolutely comparable.

If you've got $60k to spend, there are a friggen LOT of options out there.

How about instead of an FT86, buying a restored 240Z for $20k, an already built caged track or rally car for $20k, and then spending $20k on something to daily drive?

The above is a better 'investment' in that you're not instantly throwing away half your money in three years time.

It's a completely different scenario if you lived in Japan, paying Japanese money for a brand new car... Hence why our selection of imports is so friggen awesome.

With our currency and import market, it just doesnt make much sense in NZ though.

I'm not saying at all that anyone should buy a brand new one  just that you can't compare a new to a used car because a premium will always be charged for something new.

Though there are reasons for someone to buy one of these new - to get exactly the options they want... Not to have to choose/find a particular color/option combo coming out of another country..

If options didn't matter, THEN you would always go for something used. Even if you bought a GT86 that had 1000kms on the clock, it would be much cheaper than a new one. But that's with the exception of people not being able to choose the options they want...

By your logic, buying almost anything new means you're throwing money away? You just lose money on it anyway..

Brandon

Some people actually just have money. Shock horror, some even like to have new things not second hand.

It really can be that simple.

I guess it's hard to understand that point of view though until you actually have the money  All of the successful people I know buy brand new vehicles not second hand.

There really is almost no point buying a new car unless you want the options spec'd 'exactly' to your preference. One of the old man's employees bought himself a Holden R8 brand new for around $90,000 in 2007, next year it was $65,000 and now they're $35,000-40,000. That's not successful, that was just a stupid, non-automotive minded decision

Don't know if Toyhota will follow suite.
Although 25k price tag looks a little better than 60k

Believe it or not, there are people who do want a brand new car exactly how they want, and are happy to lose money on it or earn enough that a $30k hit isnt such a major. Foreign concept I know.

So lets say a new model of car comes out. You have the means to buy it. You want it. Buuuuuuut it's a stupid move to buy it and you should wait 1-5 years to save some $$$?

It doesn't make economic sense to buy 95% of cars, as you'll lose money through depreciation. You should be thankful someone wanted to buy your Supra new otherwise you'd be walking. Why did you spend so much on a car to get from A to B anyway?? If car buying was all based around economics we'd run out of cars in no time as no one would want new cars. But it's not, it's about buying cars you want and can afford.

As opposed to buying an older car, then pouring money into it and at the end of the day it's still worth about what you paid, if not less??

Yeah they are out there. There are people that buy a brand new car,
and 3 years later when the warranty runs out they trade it in on another brand new one.
They are also the type of people who probably never go on internet forums.

If no-one buys new cars, then there are no second hand cars.

Depends on what forums you are on, and what you are into, can understand why Toyspeed would not have many new car buyers as Toyota have not done anything remotely good or affordable for the last 12 years. I have been on forums for well over 10 years and buy a new car every few years as I like new products, I don't have a 10 year old phone or TV either and my fridge did not come second hand from Japan.

The FT86 may change this and as a Toyota enthusiast at hart I think its quite exciting, I think Toyspeed may see a new wave of members over the next few years.

I had an Altezza back in the day when hey were cool and new, over the three or so years I owned it 02-06 they were very popular and there was a lot of hype around the model, it was good for the local Toyota scene, it was a great car back then and the local enthusiasts and Altezza Club runs were awesome, maybe there will be a local FT86 Club much like there is a Altezza club... would be silly not to have a FT86 section on Toyspeed to attract new members of a different quality.

Just disappointed with the initial pricing indications, I hope that over time the popularity and buzz will dies down, supplies will be easy to source and pricing will become more attractive.

^ Exactly :) All I'm saying is wait until an official price is released, don't follow some vague statement of "Under $60k"...

The key part that has been left out of this discussion is thus:

Buy a GT86, not a BRZ.

And when you are ready to buy a GT86, come see me :D
