Too much toe? Wheels spaced?

Postby TRD_ZERO » Sun Apr 29, 2012 7:44 pm

I converted from superstrut to McPherson and now both the front wheels are sticking out as if the steering rack is too short.

I'm using the super strut rack ends and didn't remove or adjust them just popped them out of the hubs. They are quite visibly off when the wheels are off.

Has anyone done this or know if this happens when doing this conversion? Mane the mounting point on the hub arnt in the same spot.

Also how much adjustment are in the rack ends because I want to wind them out but worried there isn't enough thread to do so safely?

Rack ends and tie rods are hugely different! You can buy non superstrut stuff and put onto the original rack and will get you ballpark correct.

Have you got the non-SS ones to compare? The tie rod ends/rack ends usually thread together anywhere between 12-20 turns.

I do have both sets. But don't want to take the ss ones off if I don't have to.
I've been told that I can use the ss ones with the McPherson setup.
I know I can just adjust them but not sure to what extent.
So about 12-20 turns until they come off? how many turns from completely off if safe? Just so I know my limit until I have to completely change them.

1.5 to 2 times the diameter: 10mm threads need 15 to 20mm engagement. If the rod ends use a jam nut, that is plenty, but if it is the type with a split sleeve & clamp, I'd go for 5-10mm past the clamp.
Just do it or you will never know. No one else knows what your combination of
original, & OEM aftermarket & whatever will equal.

I put a SS AE111 rack in my AE92. No way in hell superstrut rack ends/tie rods was going to work. I swapped to new AE92 stuff and it's aligned up well.

Just buy the correct bits and it works with the original rack I'm sure.

Yep you need to swap to the non SS steering arms.

Pretty easy to do.

I wanted to keep the banana rod ends and just wind them out until the wheels lined up. I did that yesterday but to get the wheels to sit straight the arms would only have 3 complete 360 degree turns from off which in my mind just doesn't sound safe to run. Some of my friends think otherwise.
So I'm going to have to run the McPherson arms and ends.

Also now looking at the car the right hand wheel seems to sit out further than the left as if I'm running a spacer?
WTF is going on? How did this happen? I'm going to have to look into it when I get the chance.

Any ideas what could have caused this?
