Postby Vertigo » Mon May 14, 2012 11:47 am

is there a difference between RWD and FWD starter motors for 4AGE engines? can they both be used in either configuration?

I was led to believe that there wasn't and I can't see any reason that they would be different.

Having said that, the (originally fwd) smallport in my AE85 (using A/M bell and W55 with original smallport flywheel and starter) made a horrible noise which disappeared when I swapped it for an AE86 one.

Hope that answers your question

There are three types of starter,
Convention
Gear reduction
and Planetry gear,

and two different mounts,
Mounts 1 one suits 16V 4age and AW11 GZE,
and Mount 2 suits the 20V and the late GZE,

so 6 different basic combinations of starters,
and a few small differences in them that most wont notice.

But all the mount 1's interchange
and all the mount 2 types interchange.

Does mount 2 goes on intake side and mount 1 on exhaust?

Also what is better conventional gear or planetary?

i think planetary or the reduction gear would be better because of the reduced current needed to get them going...

Yeah basically an intake side mounted one and an exhaust side mounted one.

The conventional is the older type,
and the gear reduction is much better but quite bulky stil.

the planetry gear type is the best as it has a lot more torque and is quite compact.

The planetry type was still used until at least late 2000's on different engines and may stillbe used as I have not seen a toyota type more modern yet.

Planetary are the ones that have a solenoid and generally the teeth aren't spinning much before they make contact with the ring gear?

And the other sort is the where the starter gear is on some sort of system as the motor turns the gears twist out like a screw?
