link ecu and msd coil

have a link G4 storm and im wanting o upgrade my coil with an msd one does any one know of any problems i may have this is the coil i am thinking of using
"Pro Power HVC Coil, Use w/MSD 7 Series, Part No. 8251"

A coil designed for a MSD ignition system is only compatable with a MSD system,

Which is different than an MSD coil designed to replace a standard coil on a standard system.

these are the two coils im looking at buying

the first is the one i want but it says in its instructions that its only for use with an msd ignition,
the second says that it can be used with any factory or aftermarket ignition
they are both the same price

1: Pro Power HVC Coil, Use w/MSD 7 Series

both coils look the same
can anyone give me any reason why the first is said to only be used with MSD ignitions

what are you trying to do, what engine & setup?

obviously your running a dizzy setup.. better off ditching that and going wasted spark or cop. than buying some shiny red coil

Primary resistanc of both is way too low,

would last about 10 seconds before it blows a fuse, melts the igniter, or both.

A good electronic ignition coil is about .8 ohms.

12v at 0.8 ohms is about 15 amps
12v at 0.04 ohms is about 300 amps
12v at 0.02 ohms is about 600 amps

Going to put a 600A fuse in there???

its on a BT 4age(heavily modded)(toda OS pistons, toda cams etc)
with link G4 storm
factory coil, igniter and dissy

how does the igniter work and what is its purpose?

what coil would you suggest?
what should i be looking for when selecting a coil?

everyone will probably reccomend something different,

but i would go for something like this

HEC715 bosch,

but then you will not get an HT lead that will fit that and the 20V dist cap,
will have to make one.


The standard 20V coil will be way more than adequate,
But i'd be suspect on the toyota igniter.

we have not had much luck with toyota igniters and aftermarket ecu's
as the toyota igniter is more of a module than an igniter,
it has too many functions in it like dwell control and similar,
better to go for a so called 'dumb' igniter like a a J121.

should run fine on stock ignition, as above.
have ran the toyota ignitors without any issues on a few link setups.

probably whats inside the bosch j121 above.


i'd probably still switch to a wasted spark or cop setup. easy to setup with your link.
