Cars that run on the smell of an oiley rag?

Postby FST4RD » Mon Jun 18, 2012 1:50 pm

Looking for a car that costs next to nothing to run round town.
Has to be manual, reliable and only want to spend up to $4k max.
What sort of cars would people recommend?
I want another mini, but i would assume a fuel injected car around the same engine size will be better on gas?

97 Mitsubishi Mirage, 1500 carby NZ new.

We regularly saw 5.0l/100km in this beast, shame it got written off after an argument with an SUV.

We had one, 30 litre tank or something, that lasted 550 km!

Mum has a March with a 1.2 motor. It's not so economical cause you have to use a lot of accelerator to get it up to speed.

March's have a bad reputation. BHG and stretched timing chains.

Daihatsu Mira I had one that'd do 20km/l highway. Bloody awful car though!!! The 5AFE Corolla gets nearly that, and is 100 times less likely to kill me in a crash.

Tell me about it! Just clocked 100k and the chain has just been done.
New car will never see the highway, just to and from both jobs and the gym (about 80k a day).

I've got a 1996 Hyundai Lantra wagon. 1.8 EFI manual and I get about 6.7l/100k on long trips and 7.5l/100km around town. I've had it since March '06, and apart from replacing the clutch (thrust bearing went) and rear shocks ($220 + about 2 hours of my own time) I've had to do virtually nothing to it. Done a shade over 250000kms now, and still goes very well.

It's because it had zero safety features, zero creature comforts and was made from the crappiest materials available. Pretty much what Lotus would have made, if they were in the economy hatchback market.
