They aren't a very good car though

If all you want to do is go somewhat quickly for the least amount of money, then yes get one.

They put down the same amount of power (on the dyno) and are lighter with an LSD. Also you would get a much newer car with less kms for the same money as the supra.

comparing a 4dr family sedan to a 125K GT car is like compaing apples and oranges....... JZA80's go around corners like skylines could only dream about.

But then you'd still have an R33, not a Supra 8) Why would it be newer? and some of the szs have the LSD too, like one of mine did.

when I say it would be newer I mean that you would be harder pressed to find a 97/98 supra in good condition than the same year skyline which is much more common. But to be honest

The most bulletproof choice would be an R33 GTS25T, 10k would get a nice one and they just dont seem to blow up, just ask Lith

Who said anything about a 4 door car? No me....

Also I would be VERY surprised if a stock non turbo 5speed supra was seriously faster in straight line or around a corner than the same R33, I have driven a few stock 5 speed supras (non turbo) and they felt very soft and rolly.

Also where did you get the 125k figure from?

a new manual na supra was $125K give or take when new. if you think a jza80 was rolly compared to the r33 either a) the supra had poked shocks/springs, or b) you cant drive and therefore dont deserve to drive the jza80

why do people think a car needs a turbo to be fast from a to b? cant anyone drive through corners properly these days? hp is irrelevant when it comes to going around a corner.

I'd have to lean towards the JZA80 NA being a quicker car around the windies and in a straight line than an R33 NA. I'd never buy either, unless it was ridiculously cheap and with the intention of building something rampant from the ground up.

I agree 100% with Shanes comments, anyone who says an R33 will outperform it, or that they are slow, really needs to perform the driver mod before worrying about needing more power. They are far more car than most drivers can keep up with, thats a fact.

I bought one because they handle brilliantly, and are easy to strap a snail to the side of without the undue reliability worries that most other platforms would suffer from when boosting an NA motor.

That sz-r would be a great base if going na-t in the future was a possibility

You'd probably pick up a tidy E46 328 coupe for around 10K and that would out drive either of the Jappa whales you're all talking about here.

My wife has a E46 328ci and they are nothing special TBH, not that fast and not that much fun, nicely built and a stylish ladies car.

From what I have owned and driven over the years I still rate the BMW E30 M325i Tech II as my favorite, better than the AE86 and S13 and S14 that most rate, not as fast as a RX7 but better all round IMHO.

Stock standard they are brilliant cars that require a bit of talent to drive, if you can drive a stock M325i fast you can drive anything fast.

Mine has an E46 328 M/S (which is really just a cosmetic package and bigger wheels). Not saying it's particularly powerful but it'll outstop and out handle any of those Japs that're being talked about. Huge fun to drive.

Im not saying you are wrong, as I know nothing of the stopping power of the BMW in question, but considering the braking record that the JZA80 set years ago, and continued to hold for many years, until being beaten by the McLaren F1 and Porsche 911 gt2 or3, there cant be that much in it, surely?

I absolutely agree with this. I had a good friend who bought one of these near new and I had the pleasure of driving it on a number of occasions. In fact it is the car that converted me back to Euros after some years of trumpeting Japs. Sadly he passed away about 20 years ago and I have no idea what happened to the car. Absolute magical piece of kit.

Exactly, I've said for a long time that most supra's are far more capable than their drivers are.

in february this year i even suprised myself at how capable an NA supra is. People can bag them all they like for being "slow" and "heavy" and anything else they can think of. People seem to look at Integra Type R's as a baseline for N/A performance vehicles...

February this year.....

Who would have thought, that a 1400kg car with 230hp could achieve that????

i think thats more to do with hondas being over rated than supras being good
although i've just bought a 1300cc civic im keen to do speed events in and beat people who have over 100hp
