a new manual na supra was $125K give or take when new. if you think a jza80 was rolly compared to the r33 either a) the supra had poked shocks/springs, or b) you cant drive and therefore dont deserve to drive the jza80

why do people think a car needs a turbo to be fast from a to b? cant anyone drive through corners properly these days? hp is irrelevant when it comes to going around a corner.

thats fair enough, I stand corrected. You may very well be right I was surprised how saggy the supra was so it may have been totally poked. As for my driving ability. Well, who knows maybe I am terrible. You must admit though that for same money a turbo R33 vs a SZR would be a very interesting comparison in stock form?

Oh also I must add the models I drove were all 94 with only 5 speeds. I imagine a fresher face lift 6 speed SZR would be a really fun/good car.

Would you rather the SZR that was linked or the turbo skyline strx7?

He could also buy an R32 GTR + have it complied for around 8.5-9k if he wants.

Why are we comparing turbos to NA? Im confused haha, I thought we were talking about an R33 NA vs a JZA80 NA?

When mine used to be NA, It was marginally slower than an R33 gtst with a fmic, bigger masterpower turbo, EMU etc. But to be honest, I expected that would be the case, but there wasnt much in it to be fair.

No offence, but thats an appalling comparison - I wouldn't compare an NA Supra with a turbo Skyline... let alone a modified one. My R33 was in a different world of acceleration to an NA Supra. Actually, I've never even been in a turbo Supra that went as well. There must have been something seriously wrong with the way the car or driver were running to make something like that happen.

We're comparing sub 10k cars to sub 10k cars, in which case JZA80 Supra's sans hairdryers get comfortably spanked by faster, cheaper, more economical and more practical options.

+1 for an R33 GTS25t, you'll get a tidy Series 1/prefacelift (or whatever they call them in Nissan speak) and mods are cheap and plentiful. Not as heavy as you'd think, useable space (I travelled to Auckland in the back of one, I'm 6" and it wasn't terrible) and an entertaining chassis.

If it were me though I'd still be popping my hard earned cash down on an ITR, I can vouch for their hoon potential still ;) Quite possibly the most hilarious car I have ever owned. Biased opinion here of course.

Yours isnt exactly running factory gear though hehe, didnt you say it was putting out about 300wkw give or take.

The car in question Im comparing to was putting out circa 160kw at the time so Im sure you can see the difference to yours :)

cause all anyone ever wants it so do a head to head drag race...........

a well set up civic will slap a 2wd skyline about the head with a cold fish on a race track with probably 1/3 of the power............

I go back to my original statement

why do people think a car needs a turbo to be fast from a to b?

Last time i checked, this wasn't the USA, and tracks had corners........

Well you did say:
It was marginally slower than an R33 gtst with a fmic, bigger masterpower turbo, EMU etc.

Mine had FMIC, bigger Garrett turbo, Link etc - pretty much the same kind of mods the way I read it. The way you worded it (skipped the detail that his was obviously not running to potential for no reason of its own) makes it make turbo R33s look silly, when in reality by the sounds of it a completely bog stock R33 GTS25t could have matched or beaten Simon's the way it was running there.

NILPSI's SZ-R goes well enough, and certainly seems to handle well too. Still, I'd buy a hackers FD and spend the change on maintenance/brake pads
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

Yay a pissing contest! I can thrash Supercars in my hatchback, doesn't mean its fast it means anyone can buy a supercar and drive it slowly.

I would rather a slow fun car than a fast boring car.

Clio RS is a hoot if you can afford the maintenance.

TRD Man wrote:Mine has an E46 328 M/S (which is really just a cosmetic package and bigger wheels). Not saying it's particularly powerful but it'll outstop and out handle any of those Japs that're being talked about. Huge fun to drive.

True it will stop and out handle them but I would argue it is fun. Open diff and a heavy feel designed more around cruising than fun is how I would see it, after driving the Renault's it take a good half hour to adjust to how slow and heavy it feels, I alway think they are the perfect car for a stoner.

Unfortunately BMW stopped making anything overly sporty years ago and left it to buying a proper M car to get a true sports feel.

I think the Integra or Levin/Trueno BZR are great options for a fun reliable car and is a good base to get into actual motorsports if/when Trackdays get a bit boring and you decide to get a clubsport licence do a few events with the real drivers

:D

Nope, I've seen at least 3 for sale before (and that's not even specifically looking for them) and they are said to be in 'good to very good' condition and ready to be complied. All around 110-150kms.

Ok I'll bite, the comment is really totally relevant in this context to be fair...

More power gets you between the corners faster. No one has said you NEED a turbo, but a fast car is not solely one that can pull some mad g'z through a corner.

personally i think ITR is the best option. if it came down to a ae1xx or an ITR the ITR is a far better car with better aftermarket support than a toyota can ever hope for . wish i could own one maybe one day.

i think its more a case of what floats your boat. some people just get their rocks off over a drag race... personally i don't see the challenge for the driver and definately not as fun as pushing the limits overhanging a 100m cliff face or the like. :D

Yep, spent plenty of time around them over the years. Have been to a million (give or take 999,900) where there are gaggles of track spec Civics and Integras doing well respectable times, sometimes passing near stock or even reasonably modified but still fully street (ie, street tyres, full interior, general cruiser spec) Skylines with relative ease and hearing or even partaking (when there is an overinflated ego to be popped :D) in the lolling at Goliath being nommed by David.

However, occasionally a Skyline that has a good LSD, good tyres and brakes and 300+kw is NOT going out with the intention of drifting - and more often than not only the absolute quickest of Hondas will keep up with or beat it, if any. Hell, the guy who bought my old turbo setup from my Skyline put his out to Manfeild on normal street tyres and ran a quicker time than he ever did in his old ITR on his first track day with that setup and I am quite sure he is not looking back since his upgrade.
