Replacing Deisel Fuel Fliter

Postby BZG Wagon » Thu Jun 28, 2012 12:14 pm

The deisel fuel filter on my Nissan Terrano looks a bit corroded and possibly factory so I'd like to replace it - is it a case of unscrewing and screwing back on, or do I need to bleed the air out before starting up again?

They are common for getting air trapped in the lines when doing a fuel filter change.

easiest method i find to do this is...

unhook and clamp of fuel hoses. this is important otherwise the fuel will drain back to tank and it will take ages to pump it back up.
change filter. put inlet fuel hose back on, pump primer until fuel starts coming out of filter outlet. fit outlet hose back on.
you may want to partly fit it on and pump the primer in an effort to keep the fuel hose filled with fuel. the less air left in the hoses the better.

start engine. DO NOT REV IT.
if its stops, due to bit of air in fuel hose, prime it till hard then restart.

whenever I change Diesel filters, 4X4, Diggers, Loaders, Trucks, etc, I always pre-fill my filters with fresh diesel before refitting

If that fails:
Use the manual pump then if the engine will not idle accelerator or the engine cuts out when coasting. Try undoing the injector lines at the injectors then turn over or if you can get it to idle then crack the injector lines one by one and let them leak a bit, you may see a buble or two in the infected line. This cleans up the issue and she will run well.

Hmm.... might be easier to take it to a workshop for replacement. Planning a long trip on Sunday and I really don't want any issues.

Thanks for the info though.

Take off old filter, put new filter on, prime it. tu meke, bro.

Just make sure the hose going from filter to injectors doesn't fall down into the bay.

It sounds more complicated than it is, the first reply is spot on if you want to do it the easy way.

2 hoses to the filter, clamp them off and then remove them from the filter.
Replace filter
Fit the feed hose and unclamp it
Pump the primer until fuel comes out
Put the other hose on and unclamp
Start the engine.

Thanks for the offer bzrspeed; it's cool though I've booked it in with Nissan and it won't cost much to install.

If I wasn't using it for a long trip I'd give it a shot, but I'll leave it to the experts this time.
