Brake pad and rotor wear in race car - thoughts?

Postby TWSTD » Sat Jul 14, 2012 10:32 pm

Hi peoples.

Im somewhat stumped as to why we are wearing pads so quickly in our race car (evo powered 4wd charade). Current brake setup is EVO 3 front calipers and znoelli S12 heat treated motorsport rotors with PMU racing 999 pads. We have chewed through a set of pads in 2 outings! I know they are getting very hot and all i can summise is that although the heat is not sufficient to fade them (ie over 850-900 degrees C) it is hot enough to cause a substantially accellerated rate of wear. Incindentally i had Pagid RS4-2 (blues) in the prior and they went down in a similar time but also suffered some fading issues. We since had some ducting made from the front bumper to the centre of the rotors.

Surely its not normal to get only about 180 race kms (about 70 laps of hampton downs) out of a set of pads? I know this charade is somewhat faster than my old race car but we used to get a whole season from a set of front pads in that!

Also note the uneven wear on either side of the rotor in the photos below. Is that just due to it being a basic twin pot caliper?

IMHO non slotted discs would make them last longer. the 310mm discs i had on the front of the ae104 were slotted and ate through pads at that rate if not quicker.

Get something with at least a piston on each side, that will create more even wear left to right.
PMU site doesn't have a 999 compound, what are the specs of that? Bigger rotors with bigger pads should mean the brakes wont get as hot, but first thing is to make sure the pad compound is a good one.

oh, I looked here http://www.pmuracing.com/?page_id=2

It looks like a good compound, maybe the pads/rotors just need to be bigger.

Those pictures look pretty much like my race brakes do now after about 28 laps at manfeild.
Although my car is heavier im still running the same calipers with Ferodo DS3000 pads. I get pad fade after 3 laps.
Id be upgrading to piston either side and larger discs.

What's up with the rotor being all crazy cracked? Is that a heat thing or?

They have seen some serious heat alright, that would be the 1st thing I'd be getting sorted out, have you run some temp paint or the likes to see actual temps?

You need to get temps down to get a suitable pad working correctly, how much brake bias to the front have you got...are your rears doing anything?

Extreme heat will kill most pads in no time at all, especially once they get some wear. Looks like you are well under braked or have lack of air for cooling for the speeds

Brakes are too small IMO.
Also need 4 piston calipers that will create more even wear.

Either upgrade to later model evo brembos or custom fit something else.
