Identifying W boxes

Postby AE86less » Thu Jul 19, 2012 4:27 pm

Some of you may remember the issue I asked about with me onselling an incorrect W - JZ bellhousing. I'm now dubious about whether the box I bought it with is actually a W57. I don't want to be putting it into my ae85 and finding out it has $&#$% up diesel ratios or something.

When I dropped the W55 I expected them to have identical casings/housings. Would this be correct? They are the same shape, but have slightly different 'lines' cast into them. Is there a way of checking without doing via ratios? I failed to get a photo last time I was at the car.

EDIT:

New box has a small, solid circle cast into the centre line somewhere along here that I first noticed:

Also, if you google image W57 Ryanfels' old gx61 comes up on page 4

I've got a 55 and 57 at home, i'll try and remember to take some photos of them side by side on the weekend for you. iirc they have a different number of horizontal castings?

Ok, so they are different? That's a good start, I was kinda expecting them to be identical

That would be great if you don't mind.

Ratios is probably your easiest way to be really sure.

Since ratios are the only difference it is the only way to tell,
as you can swap housing between them all.

Does the alloy sandwich plate have anything to do with it? I'm sure most of the 57's I've seen were alloy.

The ratios are all here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_W_transmission

Opps forgot about this thread :)

Checked both my boxes, they are both 57s (the 55 must have gone with the uz *shrug*) one has a steel plate, the other alloy, one has the little circle on top, the other doesn't, i'd say they were a different box, if i didn't know they weren't.

The w58 that came fitted to the NA JZA80 was the steel sandwich plate version, hope that helps.
