ae111 4age 20v Idle surge problem

I have 1997 Toyota levin ae111 4age. It idles fine if I drive conservatively (under 3000rpm) but once I go past it and pull over or stop at a traffic light it idles really rough and gets down to 300rpm. If I wait 30 seconds it will be back to normal. I have tried the MAPsensor and the idle control valve and it still has the same problem. Has anyone else had the same problem or know what the problem is?

my first bet would be pull negative battery terminal for half an hour to reset the ecu

Pull the EFI Fuse for 10seconds instead, no reset clock or stereo...

just tried resetting the ecu and no change, and the check engine light doesnt come on either.

Does it come up when you turn on ignition?
When you bridge TE1 and E1 pins in diagnosing connector does the check engine light flashes continuously?

fuel injection fuse resets ECU?

No it does not.

Sergi is incorrect,

the Fuel Inj fuse is the ignition switched feed.


You actually need to pull the brake light fuse to do it as that is where Toyota ECU's battery supply comes from.

Not quite: I have repair manual in front of me for ST205 GT4 and the diagram clearly has EFI fuse feeding BATT pin on ECU.

And the following states in it:

The ECU stores the code(s) until it is cleared by removing EFI fuse with ignition switch OFF


I suspect this is correct for all the vehicles of that era (including AE111).
Perhaps 2003+ vehicles are different, but this is correct for all Toyotas with EFI up to 2001+.

the brake light fuse has nothing to do with the engine ecu. The 15A EFI fuse supplies the BATT pin (memory pin i think), circuit opening relay and EFI relay of the ECU which the relay is ignition switch controlled. So its actually the EFI fuse to pull out if you want to reset the engine ecu.

Just recheecked, AE111 is batt feed through the IGN fuse,
so you were correct.

but the early suff the BATT is definatly through the Brake fuse.

like here on the Smallport 4AGE.

perhaps it only applies to the ones with round yellow diagnostic connector?
I have checked repair manual for 1986-1993 T series celica ( xT16x-xT18x) and it is also fed by EFI fuse. Same for 2007 Yaris and 2001 Ist (have repair manuals for both).

Had the same problem with mine when I first got it running.
for starters make sure your running solely on 98.

next check your o2 sensor: http://www.locost7.info/files/engine/4a ... bt8-fi.pdf

after replacing my dead one with a brand new one everything ran alot smoother.

Make sure your spark plugs are up to spec, either denso iridium PK20R11's
or NGK BKR6EP-11's

the thing ran like a bag of balls with anything else in it, not very smooth idling, missing etc.
