Oil spitting out BOV

Postby DXROLLA » Sun Aug 12, 2012 6:25 pm

I know its not a Toyota but after the drag racing on Saturday i noticed oil has been spitting out the BOV quite a bit aswell on my Subaru, im either guesing seals on the turbo or a bit of blow by, if it is blow by does this mean time for a rebuild or could i get away with running a catch can set up, i also noticed before i went racing the oil was slightly over full, could this be a reason for causing this? I checked the oil this morning and it is right on the full mark now.

Could be a number of things. Do a cylinder leakage test on it.

Managed a 14.3 with just easing it off the line so i was pritty happy with that, i think if i launched it i would easily get into the 13s so for a standard sti i thought that was pritty good, and its done just over a 192,000km
Will post a quik vid in the multimedia section of me beating a 500hp supercharged amg merc ( only because he had no traction of the line )

or a compression test . if its not smoking from the exhaust then its probably nuthing to worry about. your always going to get oil in the intake if the breathers are running to it. still do the tests to make sure its ok

Could be front seals on the turbo or like mentioned earlier the breather lines going to the intake as you said oil level was high. Check your intake for oil and while it's off check compressor wheel for oil and so on.

Compression test? Could someone explain how that could cause oil comming out of the bov? I'm genuinely curious.

Yeah at first i thought it may be the turbo, was hopeing it was anyway as that is easy to fix
I took the intercooler off last night and cleaned it all out was full of oil, there seemed to be more oil on the intake side rather that the turbo side, so im leaning more to blow by being the issue.
Seeing as the oil was over full would that cause blow by to happen, as in to much oil in the sump, more likely to get blow out?

EJ20s do seem to get a fair bit of blow by normally, and obviously more so at high kms.

Yes overfilling (while recommended by some for reducing the chance of oil starvation during hard cornering) does lead to an increase in oil getting into the intake. I used to fill mine to the notch in the dipstick (about 5mm above the full hole) but found this caused it to randomly blow a smokescreen on startup, reducing it to just the full hole eliminated this - only way in for the extra oil would be through the crankcase and/or cam cover breathing into the intake.

What weight oil are you running?

I havnt done an oil change yet since i have owned it, but looking at the sticker it is running Havoline 5w40 and the last service was done by oil changers in Dunedin, its due for a service on time but not ks so will be doing an oil change this weekend probably.
What oil would you recommend?

Its also coming up for the big cambelt, spark plugs ect to be changed aswell :x

I'm far from an oil expert but I'd go for 10w40 synthetic, and consider a 10w50 (I've been running HPR10 personally - 10w50 full synthetic at a realistic price). The extra film thickness at operating temperature should help reduce the blowby and starting with a higher weight should help to maintain decent film thickness as the oil degrades between changes. I'd also recommend changing oil & filter every 5000km on any turbo vehicle.
