Goddam crackling speakers

I chucked some soundstream tarantula 4" speakers in the front of the wagon because the old ones (an old aftermarket style, but in good knick) were occasionally making horrible noises. Now that ive seen them i think that the noises were due to the extended speaker wire joins not even being taped and touching together?

Anyway, new speakers are cracking on both sides, all thats changed is that ive taped the joins. Can anyone give me a checklist of things to run through to fix this? Crackle is only at higher volumes or bass levels.

what are you running the speakers off? headunit or amplifier?

Head unit. JVC 4x50 thing, speakers are 40wrms.

Speakers are brand new for what its worth.

loltape. Crimp them and see how it fares. 4" speakers generally dont do bass that well anyway

Yeah, i didn't have a lot of time and there were no crackles in the old speakers so I assumed that tape to stop them shorting would do for now.

I realise 4" speakers aren't going to shake the house down, but my sample music was the last foos album on a 'rock' EQ preset. The volume only has to be at about a 1/4 or 1/3 or capacity to crackle.

wait so your wires arent even taped? just twisted together?

i got a crackling noise in my rear speakers when i changed them for some 6x9s (which were a temporary solution until i could afford proper gear) and found the wires were shorting on the parcel tray and making horrible buzzing/crackling noises (until i fixed them of course). could be something to look into.

This! Any joins between wires should be soldered and insulated (preferably with heatshrink tubing, but insulation tape works too)

Crackling is most often caused by poor wiring or speakers that can't handle the volume.

Yeah, the joins were already soldered, but not insulated. Bear in mind that I didn't change these connections in any way except to tape them and the last speakers were fine.

Is it likely that these speakers I bought are just shit?

yea i thought this too, badly baffed 4inch speakers always take a beating if the ol >80hz isnt taken out

that lovely tone of the voice coil hitting the magnet


if you have other speakers you could put a filthy crossover cap inline
