Are the rules around open top cars (i.e. MX5) the same as PlayDayOnTracks?

Do you feel their rules are unfair in some way?

From their events emails:
RULES FOR OPEN CARS

All open cars (i.e. soft top convertibles) must have roll protection, either factory fitted such as: Boxter, S2000, Z3, Z4, 350z, 370z & Elise etc. or suitable aftermarket roll protection if it is not Factory fitted.

So must have a roll bar fitted at a minimum I'd say.

Thanks for that, not looking at doing this one, but future days at Manfield with them.

I have a roll bar fitted, but not homologated. (was just making sure its not like the dual car sprints where you need a homologated bar)

No. I was at Ruapuna on their South Island Tour in 2009 and an SW20 with targa tops spun off to the inside of the track and rolled. It was after that incident that they decided that open cars needed roll protection for safety of participants. They're just being careful.

I couldnt agree more. Safety is paramount.

My question was only asked due to the *eyeroll* at the end of the members question.

There was a eyeroll....not sure if 'unfair' is the right word....more like 'unfortunate' as it excludes a lot of cars from participating.

A smallish 70s or 80s car isn't exactly strong in the A-B-C pillars and like an MX5 (with a very strong A pillar) would survive an intitial hit....but perhaps not be in such good shape after that.

I realise that Playday is covering their bum....but I don't know if that is requirement of their liability insurance or just for 'good measure'. I for one certainly take my exclusion of liability seriously when I sign their form so I think if their requirement is due to 'good measure' then it should be re-considered.

I've had a roll bar in my old MX5 and will get one in my current one, it's just a bit of a 'huh' moment when you see roofed cars, also with shitty roll over protection, roaring around the track....the assumption is that because a car has a roof it will be 'safe' in a rollover.

Is my safety worth it? Definitely- The same argument could be made with lots of cars when you track it or drive it fast without a cage.

The fact is that a hardtop will guarantee the first part that comes into contact with anything in any rollover will be metal. Not your head.

Believe me, you dont want to know what an armco feels like should you be misfortunate enough to roll over one. Decapitation is a very real threat, and thats not the sort of publicity that would help businesses like P.O.T to grow, and be seen by the public as responsible.

If I recall correctly, P.O.T have a recommended MX5 rollbar expert that they can pass on details for, to ensure your bars meet their standards so maybe get in touch and get the info straight from the horses mouth.

There are other days out there that will mroe than likely let you enter your car without rules on the type of cage, but I would be worried that they would also be lax on other important safety at the same time.

EDIT: just dug this into out of one of their emails...

RULES FOR OPEN CARS

All open cars (I.E. soft top convertibles) must have roll protection.

As this predominately affects MX5’s we contacted Don at Autoway Services who has had a roll bar he considers suitable made up & fitted to his car. Style bars are not acceptable unless braced appropriately.

Please deal with Don direct & if you have another type of open car he will be happy to look at what can be done for it. Ph 07 8475484

If your car has factory fitted roll bars e.g. Boxter, S2000, or built in roll bars e.g. Lotus Elise, there is no need to add anything else.

Is a targa top Sw20 considered open top? It doesn't appear on their list of cars needing rollover protection?

My previous car was the one I purchased one of the 'Don-bars' for.

hmmm...it was a few years ago now (install pics here: http://www.mx5forum.co.nz/viewtopic.php?t=9290)

I think it was $350....Im looking at getting one fabricated for my NB....I like the mounting of that bar but would like to have it as a twin hoop style and have some sort of rear-stays.

From our point of view if we put something on safety is first and foremost... hence working with playday.

Anyway if anyone wants in please let me know as i am running out of slots pretty fast.

Should all cars then require airbags to enter?

I'm trolling....but I hope you see my point.
