Gen 1 and Gen 2 MR2 3SGTE interchangeability

Postby sunskreens » Sun Oct 14, 2012 1:51 pm

Hey team quick question, are gen1 and gen 2 ignition systems intechangeable? Ie the whole dizzy, cap, rotor and all, and leads between Gen 1 and Gen 2 GT and GTS? Just trying to troubleshoot someones car atm. Thanks in advance!

If it helps, gonna try and use Gen 1 gear on Gen 2 engine to see if ignition on gen 2 is poked

Both are gen2 3SGTE engines, so shouldn't be a problem. Coil and igniter might be different, but swap them as a pair and you should be fine so long as the connectors are the same

Should have been a bit clearer. We are gonna try and use my gen 1 stuff from my GT, into a mates 93 GTS. Mainly just rotor, dizzy cap and leads to check and see if it improves the situation.

Yep, so both gen 2 3sgte motors. Unless its a late 93 Gen3 (ie, the facelift model) sw20, in which case its a gen3 3sgte motor, and then they probably wont be compatible.

The sw20 never got the gen1 3sgte, only the st165 got that one i think.

<3 Thanks man. Gonna try them tomorrow night. Just as a side note, the GTS (93) has clips for the leads, whereas the TGP new for the GT (90) has just plug in leads. Will it make a difference? Im assuming rotor will also have 2 screws holding it in, or will I have to play discover the similarities? Lol

You sure the 93 is a gen 2, pretty sure that was gen 3 swap over year.

The leads attach differently to the cap. The 89-91 are friction fit, wheras the 92-10.93 have a clip like the coil lead.

Yup, but if I were to just swap it over to test, I would be swapping the whole cap and all the leads too, so should be hunky dory right?

So as it turns out, the coil point is also different between Gen 1 and Gen 2 3S. Coil point for Gen 1 is much wider than coil point for Gen 2. Gen 2 tapers in. I had to squeeze the point with some pliers gently and I can confirm you can swap em all round. Just need to mess about a bit with the widths of the coil lead. Hope this may help!
