I hear the hyundai i45 isn't actually a bad car, might be a realistic option for run of the mill cop car. Not sure its up to pursuit/nudge bar duty tho.

Why not use some hiluxs like they use in Kalgoolie cops? And get the commofores for the highway patrol boys?

On looking at the current NZ model ranges of various manufacturers, I actually think that either Ford or Mazda provide the best options for the police.

I see it like this.

Mazda
Pursuit car: Mazda 3 MPS (or Mazda 6 MPS if they make a comeback)
General Duties: Mix of Mazda 3's and 6's
Highway Patrol: Mix of Mazda 6's and Mazda 3 MPS's (athough would be Mazda 6 MPS's if the rumours of them making a comeback are true)
Community Constables & CBD beats: Mazda 2
Detectives: Mazda 6's and Cx 5 & 9's
Crash and other technical units/speedcameras: Mix of Maza 6 wagons, and Cx 5's & 9's, and BT-50's
Rural Cops: Mix of Mazda 6 wagons, and BT-50's/Cx9's depending on area.

Ford
Pursuit Car: XR6-Turbo, or Ecobost Mondeo
General Duties: Mondeo (mix of diesel & petrol)
Highway Patrol: Ecoboost Mondeo
Community Constables & CBD Beat: Fiesta
Detectives: Mondeos & Fiestas
Crash & other tech units/speed cameras: Mondeo Wagons, Kuga/Territory, Transits.
Rural Cops: Mondeos & Rangers, depending on area[/quote]

What about those new 2.0L ecoboost falcons?

I would have thought the same pressure is on car companies as the police force.

As in, people still want a decent sized car with resonable performance but want it to use less gas. Hence the push for turbo diesels and smaller petrol turbos in bigger cars.

Which are the same pretty much as the NZ/Aus spec Police Commmodores, just with wider seats, and the steering wheel on the other side. Also think they're V8 only.

I kinda counted out the ecoboost falcon, as it still carries a lot of the weight of a normal falcon, without the power and speed of a normal one.

But also I guess an option.

Would all depend on what the manufactures offer I guess, as there needs to be a police spec option available for what ever they choose, with the upgraded electrical system, heavy duty suspension etc. Which the Mondeo must have, given that its used as a police car in the UK.
Not sure if Mazda have such options though.

I don't think you understand what that kind of thing cost. The old chev ambulances when converted and kitted out are around the 150k mark.

and the fact that the US commodore Police car is based on the commodore, wouldn't be anywhere near cheaper.

The current Police Interceptor sedan from Ford, is a Ford Taurus, so the Falcon from the US. No way it would be cheaper to buy one of those, and convert it to RH drive.

In reality it has to be a model available in Aus/NZ that can be upspecced with a police kit.

Why???

They need a car that is reasonably priced, big enough to fit 3 Samoans in the back, can tow, can push, its available with reasonable aftersales/lease support etc. What they have at the moment is perfect.

Who knows what's going to be available in 7 or so years. Realistically if they are launching both a new Falcon and Commodore in the next year or so they will be around for at least that long. There is still a demand for larger cars, it's just not what it used to be.

And at this rate we probably won't have any front line Police staff anyway, so we won't need Police cars
